Are there any gym classes or training plans that would help me prepare for an obstacle race?
There are a number of different ways you can prepare for an obstacle race, so it’s best to choose the training options that you prefer. Remember it’s not just about speed, so gym classes like circuit training or workout routines like the P90X will be really helpful.
The P90X workout routine guarantees you the full body workout that you need. As, during the race you’ll use muscles you didn’t even know you had! The classic routine offers three days of resistance, coupled with three days of cardio and yoga. This will build up a good mix of speed and strength that will come in handy on the day. And, the yoga could make all the difference, as obstacle races aren’t just about endurance and strength, flexibility counts for an awful lot as well.
Circuit training or body conditioning classes, like bodypump, will both provide really good preparation too. Also, if you want to get the most realistic pre-mudder experience, a boot camp or an army style training course will provide a good workout, with the added benefit of experiencing outdoor training.
Remember, variety is the key to a good training routine, so be sure to mix your regime up regularly so that you’re constantly pushing yourself. Combine running with gym classes and resistance training. It’s sure to pay off as variety is certainly something you’ll be experiencing during the obstacle race! You’ll find that, as you progress you’ll gain more confidence and get into the mindset that you will succeed.
