How many marathons is it best to run in a year?

This is always a question that divides opinion and to a certain extent depends on the individual. However, because of the demands of marathon training and the physical and mental exertion of the race itself, it is advisable to do no more than two marathons in a year.

This will increase the likelihood of you performing at your best and will enable you to recover sufficiently between marathons, therefore reducing the chance of injury. Of course it is possible to do more than this, however you may find that it is not sustainable year after year.
