How do I get faster in my running?

To be a fast runner you need to have every facet of your training covered at some point. You have to be able to sustain a decent mileage to keep your conditioning high, you have to have done the speed work so your legs know what it means to go fast, you also need the long threshold runs and the hill reps so you have trained your speed endurance.

Easy runs are the easy part of training, they’re mostly done in your comfort zone so it’s not stressful, but the real gains will come from the sessions. Speed sessions, threshold runs and hill reps will give you much more bang for your buck than the easy runs, so make sure you make it part of your programme and give it your all.

You should hold decent mileage all year but the winter time is the perfect period to put in the threshold runs and hill reps to build strength and lay your foundations. Then once the days get longer you should hit the track for VO2 track sessions and speed work.
