I panic when people swim over me during a triathlon. What can I do?
It’s very common for weaker swimmers to panic at a crowded start, for example when people swim over them in the first few hundred metres or at the first turn. My advice would be to take the outside line at the start where there are less athletes so you have clear water to swim in.
Also, take a slightly wider line around the first buoy to avoid the scrummage. Getting too close with other athletes in the swim and accidentally locking arms can get very exhausting so try to swim as close to the person in front without actually touching them. This way you’ll both get round the course faster.
