With so many pieces of gym equipment to choose from, it’s easy to let something slide under your fitness radar and stick to what you always use. Here are 5 often ignored gym items that you should make use of.

1. Kettle bells

From strengthening the heart and back to losing weight and toning that body, kettle bells are the hot kid on the fitness block. You can use them anywhere, from the gym to the garden, although do bear in mind you will need space to wheel them around to maximum effect, so not near any windows or the greenhouse please. The resistance element of the training means you will burn calories for fun. In fact you can burn as many as 1,500 calories doing an hour with the kettle bell. And as anyone who is a fan of weight and resistance training will tell you, the calorie burn goes on after the workout. Plus they don’t cost a fortune either and come in all kinds of colours. All of which should make kettle bells your new best fitness friend.

2. Multi gym

This does exactly what it says on the tin. Most multi gyms are made from different machines with different weights all worked into one unit. You can work every muscle group with one of these and the beauty lies in the fact that you can also have one at home if you have the space. To make your workout more testing you can also develop your own circuit routine with the various weights available, or just focus on specific areas. The options are all there for you, which makes it a fantastically versatile piece of kit.  

3. Rowing machine

If you like the idea of getting a sweat on and doing a good cardio workout, you could do a lot worse than look at the rowing machine . This offers a great all round workout, that will incorporate your legs, arms, shoulders, core and shoulders, all at once. You can adjust the intensity to suit your fitness level and again this is something you could have at home in the garage, or use at your gym. It’s quick, easy and rewarding, but do make sure you get someone to check on your technique to make sure you aren’t over-stressing the back.

4. Vintage medicine ball

Now these look great in any home. But as well as being a super cool item to have in your lounge to show all of your friends and trust us, they will want one too, more importantly they will help you strengthen your core . There are a variety of exercises you can do with them, from sit ups which incorporate throwing the ball into the air, to twists and rotations to tone your side and abs. Having one of these means there is no excuse not to strengthen that core and get killers abs. And bear in mind you will also look super cool while you do it. What is not to love?

5. Resistance bands

These are so easy to use and store it’s ridiculous, but resistance bands are easy to overlook. They come in a variety of resistances and the great thing about them is that you can adapt them and their resistance to suit whatever workout you wish. You can use them to strengthen your lower and upper body, as well as improve your flexibility and injury resistance. The beauty lies in their versatility because you can take on different levels of exercise and incorporate them into stretches and moves you’re already doing. And you can use the bands anywhere. So you’ll have no excuses not to do some exercises every single day.
