Mission to Morocco - MDS 2011

In a moment of madness in July 2008 I entered the 2011 Marathon Des Sables.

MDS is a six day ultra race called by many the toughest footrace on earth. It covers 150 miles in temperatures of up to 40 degrees in the moroccan desert.

I'm a couple of years into the training now and the race is just afew months away. I try to blog here when I can on my various training and racing experiences.

Counting the days!!

Well time really has flown since the last races. I just about managed to stagger round the Punchbowl 30 the week after Druids but it was a tough ask and the legs and feet were pretty mashed after that. The week following all went rather wrong, I was sno...

Gearing up

Wow January has flown past. The training has gone pretty well in that I’m still on my feet and not injured! Mileage has been consistent and I’m now doing a few runs with a weighted pack to get prepared for the desert. That has been quite a shock to the ...

A South Downs Odyssey!

Well sadly its end of holidays for me today but I've had a lovely week off. Cambridge Folk Fest was brilliant again and I managed to miss most of the rain. Forecast wasn't too great for my planned trip on the South Downs Way but I went for it anyway and...

Time for a breather

I have been loving all this warm weather - exactly what i was hoping for this summer and its given me a bit more warm running experience. I've really enjoyed it - but I'm also very aware that its still way cooler in London than it will be in the desert ...

Dartford Half Marathon - again!

I was back to run Dartford Half - which was my first race in 2008 after the fateful decision to take part in the MdS. It was good to be back and to take part in a local race. I think most of my runs this year have been in dorset or devon so it was wonde...

Time to get back into it...

Well well well its been a while hey! I guess since the Fling I've been taking a bit of a rest. I had some trouble with my foot post race which thankfully turned out to be a muscle strain not a fracture but my attempt on Exmoor was a fail. I made it out ...

Highland Fling - 53 miles on ...

I'm now back in London after a brilliant week up in Scotland. I managed to surived the Highland Fling on 24th April. Its a super tough race but the distance and hills are certainly compensated for by the incredible scenery on the way round.  The day sta...

Well I am happy to say I survived the JCC! It was quite an incredible few days and I’m still getting used to the fact that I finished in one piece. Three days on from finishing I’m just about able to walk properly and just collect my thoughts. I drove ...

Preparing for a Challenge - t...

Well- can't believe I last posted in January?! Where did the time go! I've had a pretty reasonable run of training since January. I probably didn't quite get to the total mileage I would have liked but, two weeks from the Jurassic Coastal Challenge, I a...

New Year....new blog...

Well... OK it was New Year a couple of weeks ago but you know what I mean. I had a fab Christmas – lots of food and booze and a brilliant New Year up in Edinburgh. Running was definitely on the back burner but I managed to come through it without losing...

Blog from Wales - Coastal Tra...

(this was penned on Saturday night after the run...) Another blog from abroad! I’m sitting in my lovely hotel room at the King’s Head near Rhossilli bay in very soggy windy Wales. I’m utterly exhausted after today’s marathon. Those who know me will real...

Blogging by the Sea Part Deux...

this is a bit of a long one! Written on Saturday evening, about tea time. I’m back in my lovely hotel room after a hot bath, a bit of leg massage and the application of my lovely new compression tights. I still feel dreadful though! I didn’t sleep well ...

Blogging by the Sea Part 1

(Friday 6th Nov) Having lost my mobile charger at JW ultra I’ve had to resort to bringing my laptop down to Dorset for the first Endurancelife challenge to charge the phone! Not one to waste an opportunity and without young Spider to entertain me I thou...

JogShop Blog

Well I've just about crawled in front of my laptop to give a quick report. Weather was pretty ropey down in Brighton today...a strong wind and light rain. However after three jogshop 20's in the hot sun it actually made the race a lot more comfortable.....

Ultra runnahhhhhh!

I’ve been very naughty and not blogged for a bit. Things have been going pretty well with the training. I managed to push on with the mileage for JW ultra and headed up to Birmingham two weeks ago (time does fly!) to take part in the race. I was despera...

Ultra training...ouch

Well I returned from a lovely break in France to find myself about six weeks from my first ultra - a 30mile jaunt along the canal from Stratford to Birmingham. Instant panic and I've been training very hard ever since! Nothing like fear as a driver. I'm...

Dartford Half Marathon - 19th...

Well its just about a year since I signed up for MdS. Wasn’t desperately keen to run this half but it was a bit of a milestone last year so I thought I’d head back. It was also quite a nice way to finish off a years training. Post the Saunders disaster ...
