Keith dreams of running 2014 London Marathon

Hi I'm Keith (but I sometimes use the user name "GoldthorpesHeel")

Family grown up, in my mid 50's, I started running at the start of this year, to lose some weight. I have long dreamed of running just one marathon, and as a native South East Londoner, exiled on the South Coast, that just had to be the Virgin London Marathon. I have been offered a place to run on behalf of one of my favoured charities, CLIC-Sargent, which of course means lots of fund raising. So this blog will (hopefully) catalogue my progress towards fulfilling this dream (and maybe a few other things too).

You've Come A Long Way ... ... I told myself. I looked out of the window as the train pulled out of Weymouth station. Radipole Park Drive – you ran along there; Radipole Lake – you ran along the side of that; Alexander footbridge – you ran over that; Sp...

The Fourth (And Final) Newsle...

So what of the blogging. I've been intending to post this final newsletter, which I sent out to supporters, for a couple of weeks now, and I feel that, beyond that, I have one further London Marathon entry that I need to write (before moving on to the G...

Further Reflections On A Perf...

This Is Bonkers (continued ... ) (apologies if this is rather long, but this is my pensieve – I need to save these memories before they start to fade) … which began with the alarm going off at 5:30 Saturday morning. Several months back I booked a Travel...

This Is Bonkers …

… I told myself again and again as I travelled on the DLR from Stratford to Greenwich at 7:15, Sunday morning. Bonkers – can I really be doing this? Why am I doing this? Can I do this? What is nearly 57 year old me, up 'til a year ago never run since I ...

While collecting outside Sainsbury's in February a chap came up to me. "I love your charity" he said (whoaaaaaaa - my charity? - I'm just a bloke standing here holding a bucket!!). He went on to explain - "my mum's get cancer - but she's 91" - the point...

Short Long Run

Having a prior appointment as studio guest at Weymouth's community radio station at 11:00 this morning, the last Sunday Long Run (a short one) would not be able to serve as a dress rehearsal for next Sunday. Instead it was set the alarm clock for 6:00 a...

My Fifteen Minutes

If anyone's tapering at 11:00 AM tomorrow I have (for some reason) been asked in as studio guest on Air 107.2 Community Radio For Weymouth, listen on-line at http://www.aironair.co.uk/ Keith

Keith's Marathon Dream - The ...

Everything in it's place - I learned at some point that RealBuzz is very much a community of runners - and a place to look for support should you need it - and this might just be support in terms of how the &%!$ do I raise the £<largenumber> t...

The Greatest Love Of All

In Search Of A Mantra … or … another dose of self indulgence Early on in what has become known (to me at least) as “the Project” I borrowed a magazine from friend and ex-colleague Tim (hmmmmm – borrowed? – still have the magazine). This stressed the nee...

With Love From Me To You

This is not the blog entry that I intended to post. That is (hopefully) on my work PC and can wait for another today – instead I give you something (completely) different. So why should anyone be posting a link to their youtube channel on a running blog...

Sunday On A Friday

The Eleventh Commandment is not ... ... “thou shalt always do the long run on a Sunday” (said Nick and Pheobe from runningwithus). Family commitments dictated that Sunday was not possible for the long run this week, so, since I still have leave to use b...

Well, Well, Well

Last week's blog entry reported two welling up moments. And yesterday a third. I was bucketeering at Morrisons. A tip I picked up from my previous incarnation as a charity fund-raiser was to never go anywhere without a supply of sweets to offer to child...

Bath Half Full

Houston We Have A Problem A big weekend in the world of KeithsMarathonDream, with my big fund-raising concert on Saturday evening meaning there was no way I could stay over before the Bath Half Marathon on Sunday. Unfortunately, the two words I normall ...

If it looks like a duck, and tastes like a duck ... One of the side effects of my recent training day in London with CLIC Sargent was that I came home armed with numerous free samples of recovery drinks. Now I am a reformed character, sticking closely t...

Take The Money (Donate It) An...

So back to the fundraising business. One of my original offerings to CLIC Sargent was to "busk". But I was feeling that I had far too much self respect and inhibitions to actually do that. But a reasonable compromise seemed to be to use my bucket collec...

Hard Miles

Can't help thinking that the fundraising was rather taking over from the running as the main focus of this madcap project of mine. I had been very happy to virtually write off January, bearing in mind issues such as the dark nights, b%$^^y awful weather...

A Funny Thing Happened ...

... to me on the way to the London marathon. Not sure if I mentioned that I had been interviewed by the local press. I had another madcap idea (in addition to the original "run the London marathon" madcap idea). This was to use my charity spot outside S...

Small But Perfectly Formed ...

Not me – I refer to my room at the City Continental Hotel. This weekend sees me up in London again, attending CLIC Sargent's running training day with Nick and Phoebe (former star of Holby City!) from www.runningwithus.com/ One of the joys of coming up...

Mr Twosie Returns In One Piece

The first thing Georgie our ski instructress asked on Sunday Morning was "what do you want out of these lessons?" "To finish in one piece" I replied (bearing in mind what I have planned for April 13th). I decided that this year's ski would be a particul...

No Training Like Snow Training

Top Of The World, Saulire, Courchevel. Having spent the best part of the last three weeks wingeing about the lack of good training, this week was always destined to be a run free zone as I find myself on another singlesport holiday skiing in Courchevel...

Keith's Marathon Dream - The ...

As mentioned before, this is a multi faceted (madcap) project, and I have been determined to try and do it "properly" - both my first (and probably last) marathon, and my first (and probably last) major charity fund-raising effort. I guess that part of ...

Happy New Year – it really is time for a good update I think. New year's eve is something of a special day in Weymouth. It is traditional for everyone to go to town (literally) in fancy dress. A friend / colleague / supporter has constantly been espousi...

Hallelujah!

Definitely overdue a new year update, but I'm still waiting to get the pictures from new year's eve (which is compulsory fancy dress in Weymouth) from my friend, so that will need to wait for a day or so. But I was reading up on how to get more youtube ...
