Virgin London Marathon Virgin - My Build Up
Jonathan Walters 14.01.1983 26 Years 6’1’’ 13.5 St 16th October 2009 – 6 months to go Received my Acceptance magazine for the Virgin 2010 London Marathon. Feeling really excited about taking part, need to start my training as soon as possible as I’m beyond unfit. 26.2 miles, I can barely walk 2!! Marathon starts here. Cant Wait. 21st October 2009 Starting my first run, 7pm, in the dark so no-one can see me. Left the house feeling bouncy, springy, and loving this new healthy lifestyle.. managed to get to the end of the road, 50 yards..out of breath, sweating and I have a funny run. Hit the wall already. Imagine that I look a lot like Phoebe from Friends. Pigeon legs. Managed to do a walk/run of almost 2 miles which I felt good about, its my first time, if I use this as a benchmark, then I can only get better surely. 22nd October 2009 – Next day I’m dead.. my legs would probably hurt if I could feel them. Who’s stupid idea was this? Think I’ll leave it tonight and tomorrow just to be safe. Never going to make the marathon at this rate. 27th October 2009 Been twice since my last blog. Starting to feel a lot better going jogging, realized that if I slow down even slightly I can run for much longer. Managing to get 3 miles in 30 min, not great but I’m feeling a lot better, I’m not out of breath nearly as quickly. Tried running with some music on my mobile. Need to find something with a tempo I can run to. Either I’m sprinting with some Barthezz, or half asleep with David Gray, Note to self : Random play on music is not the way forward. Not feeling quite as bad as I did the mornings after a run. 1st November 2009 After running a bit more regularly recently, one day on, one days rest, I’m starting to feel a lot more confident that I can achieve 26.2 mile as long as I keep on schedule. Baby Steps, that’s the key. Worked out how to use the running application on my mobile. I managed 3.3 miles in 26 min. Average speed is 7.3mph. My math is pants but that would give me a finishing time of 3hr 38min. I would love to beat the magic 3.02, but there is so much that can go wrong between now and on the day, I will not beat that time. Plus there is the minor detail of having to keep that pace up for 3 hours, whilst weaving in and out of other runners, whilst getting over the start line with another 36,000 runners…. Whilst using every last bit of strength I have physically and mentally (which isn’t much). Think I’m being a tad overambitious. Manage to sprint the last few yards to the house much to the amusement of the neighbours dog Tyson. Which I haven’t blogged. Feeling great, stretched before I left the house, Bloody hell its cold. Why am I doing this? Set off well, managed a good first mile. Probably why my next three were crap. Managed to get overtaken by another runner on the opposite side of the road as he glanced across and gave me one of those ‘I’m clearly better than you’ looks. Calm down mate, its not a race… not yet anyway. Distance – 3.9 mile Time - 34:50.12 min Calories - 558.7 Smug Gits - 1 10th November 2009 – 5 Months, 14 Days, 21 Hours to go. Decided to expand the way I excercise. Went to a late night swim in Llanelli Leisure centre. Excellent, decided against the speedos and grabbed a pair of shorts. Started out alright, didn’t sink. ‘Bloody Freezing, do they put ice cubes in this thing??’ Goggles were leaking so managed to put a few laps in before I lost all visability. Then in the middle of my 10th lap, the fire alarm goes off, ‘you’ve got to be kidding me!’ No time to grab my towel, everyone lined up against the wall like some sort of identity parade whilst the nice man offers around these large pieces of tinfoil. 20 min later and I’m back in the pool, which by the way now feels like a hot tub. Distance - 60 laps Time - 30 min Negative thoughts - 4 Jobsworths - 1 12th November 2009 – 5 months, 12 days, 19 Hours to Go I ran yesterday. It was boring. I saw some cars and a few roundabouts. What a surprise. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Distance - 3.4 Miles Time - Ages Calories - 401.9 Cars - Some Roundabouts - Few 19th November 2009 – 5 months, 5 days, 20 hours to go. I’ve had a few days off since I last went jogging, the weather was crap and I couldn’t be arsed. Tan wanted to wrap my Christmas shopping so I got pushed out the front door. Not the best preparation for a run, 4 Chicken fahitas two whole glasses of milk and no stretching. I managed to get 100 yards before I got cramp. I must’ve looked like a right Timmy. Managed to cut my route considerably and ended up back at the house in 27 mins Distance – 3.2 Mile Time – 27:05.33 Min Calories – 459.1 Cramp – 1 Sick in my mouth - 2 Overambitious rating - minus 10% 22nd November 2009 – 5 months, 1 Day to Go After nearly being caught out in torrential rain/hail and thunder, I tried to get a quick one in last night whilst the weather had calmed. It wasn’t raining but the wind was unbelievably strong and kept blowing me left and right. Tried some Fartlek running which involved sprinting/ jogging/ walking repeatedly. It was going great until the wind took my hat off and I had to climb over a fence to get it. Never mind, every little helps. Not surprisingly I didn’t spot the smug jogger tonight, obviously not as hardcore as me….. 1 all. Moral Victory…. Its across between me not fancying going out in this weather and eating far to late in the evening. May go out tonight if the weather gets a bit better. We'll see. 26.11.2009 Quick run last night. Got back to the house before I got tired, so need to add another block or two onto my route. Planning to check out the christmas decorations up the council estate for my next run. Loads more houses with these on now. Tack is the word this year. Distance - 2.9 Mile Time - 25:40.24 Min Calories - 411.4 Houses with Christmas lights - 22
