Karen's Trek26 Stonehenge for Alzheimer's Society

Hi

I'm Karen.  In September I will be taking part in Trek26 Stonehenge to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society.

The route starts to the north of Salisbury at Old Sarum, goes past the cathedral over water meadows, high ridges and quiet woodland, to the village of Great Wishford towards Stonehenge, then circling south taking on undulating chalk ridges and quiet valleys before returning to Old Sarum, a total of 26 miles.

I took part in this trek last year completing the half marathon option which started in great Wishford.  I enjoyed it so much I've signed up again to take on the marathon distance this time.  I won't be doing it alone, my sister in law came with me last year and has agreed to join me again.

So, why am I doing this?  Last year my lovely Mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer's after we noticed that her memory was not as good as it was and she was becoming confused.  The shock of losing my Dad in 2015 was too much for her.  She still lives in the house they shared and is managing to live independantly and is still driving and we would like her to maintain her independance for as long as possible.  My mother in law also has Alzheimer's but hers is more advanced such that she now needs to be cared for in a nursing home.  So I'm doing this trek for them, to raise awareness of this cruel disease and to help the Alzheimer's Society fulfill their vision of a world without dementia.

We did it!

A couple of days before this challenge I was having serious doubts that I should do it, not because I didn’t think I was ready.  I was ready as I would ever be, but because I had managed to trip and fall – again!  About 10 days before the trek I tripped...

A hot week

Thank you for all your best wishes for my Mum.  Mum finally had her operation on Tuesday.  She is on blood thinning medication so they had to wait until that was out of her system before they could operate.  She was due to have surgery on Monday but it ...

The Power of 7!

As I mentioned in a previous post I'm taking part in the Virgin Pulse Global Challenge through work.  I thought it would be a great way to help me stay motivated for this training.  It lasts for 100 days with the last day being the day before the Stoneh...

Wimped out

Was fully intending to go out for a brisk walk this evening when I got in after work, but was so hot & bothered after the train journey, I sadly wimped out.  It's not as if I haven't done any walking today though.  Work is a 10 min walk to & fro...
