The Running Man

The diary of a thirty something forty two year old marathon runner and my quest to join the 100 Marathon Club....well over half way there now...72 73 down, 28 27 to go!

Ran my 1st half marathon aged 14 (Great North Run) and my second 19 years later (yep, the Great North Run again).

I'm a huge advocate of Heart Rate monitors and have been using them to help me train for the last 4 years or so. I'm currently using the Polar RS800 with the GPS G3 unit. Its the Mutts Nuts.

Hello.....and Goodbye.

So, here I am, not with a bang but with more of a whimper in all honesty. Firstly, I have heard it said (in humour) on several occasions that to be a good runner you need to choose your parents carefully as its all in the genes! There is so often a lar...

Summer is here!

This week? Didn't start off as I was hoping but still had a good solid week of running. Started the week with an enforced rest day on Monday. Job up in Lincoln went well but didn't manage to get lunch until after 1400 hours. Was home early enough to run...

Rain, Rain and more Rain.

This week? Monday and Tuesday were rest days after last weekend marathon double. Would have ran on Tuesday after work but didn't for two reasons. Firstly, my sciatic nerve had flared up again and was very raw again. Secondly, there was an horrendous clo...

MK Enigma Summer Marathons

This week? Monday was a normal day at work and running rest day after Sunday's Boddington Marathon. Tuesday started "normal". Was in the office by 0700. However, by 0900 I had been headhunted to head down to Devonport NB (Plymouth) to carry out an urgen...

Boddington Marathon

This week? With 'er Indoors not getting back from up North until Monday afternoon I had the pleasure of dropping the Little One off at Nursery and collecting her in the afternoon. Managed to squeeze an 8 miler in at lunchtime which reduced my working da...

No pain, no gain.

This week? Well Monday was a rest day after last weekends double. Very easy 4.25 miles on Tuesday evening just to make sure that everything was still working. Felt okay, albeit the legs felt "empty".Wednesday was the 4th Summer League race of the season...

Great Barrow Summer Challenge

This week? Well Monday was very very wet. Got soaked going to work, got soaked coming back from work. Went for a run after work, yep got soaked. Easy 6 miles so that I could get back in time to watch the England game. Tuesday was at least dry, so anothe...

Half Term

A quick update on this week..... Tuesday and Wednesday were rest days after the Kent RoadRunner Marathon on Monday. Left calf was a little stiff too (Solus muscle). Did a 4.25 mile recovery run on Thursday morning with the Little One in the BabyJogger. ...

Kent RoadRunner Marathon.

Well, this one was another multi-lap job. 17 times around the Cyclopark in Gravesend, Kent. The 1st lap was about 1.4 miles and about 100m shorter than the following 16. The 1st lap missed out a little down and then up section. The following 16 laps wer...

Wet Wet Wet!

So, this week? Monday was my 1st 8 mile midweek run for many months. Had the Little One with me in the BabyJogger. Started the session as an easy/recovery run but finished at more of a tempo run pace. Tuesday was an easy 4.25 miles and again with the Li...

Hot Hot Hot!

So, the last 5 or 6 days. Tuesday was another rest day. Legs felt pretty much okay from last weekend's double but the quads were a bit achy still. So, thought better to rest. Managed to bag an appointment with my Physio for Wednesday evening with a view...

White Peak Marathon and Richm...

So, the last 5 days or so. With ‘er Indoors away with work on Thursday and Friday things were a little different on the domestic front. Had to take the Little One to/from Nursery so it was a late start at work and early finish - no complaints from me! A...

Halstead and Essex Marathon

So, the last week? First, a little thought on pacing from last Sunday's Marathon of the North. I basically ran even pace (1.59/2.01 +ve split by 1.xx minutes). I was:     652nd fasted for the 1st 10k     637th fasted between 10k and 20k     615th fasted...

Marathon of the North

So, the last 5 days? Was going to have a short run on Thursday evening but just say things transpired against me. Namely, 4.5 hours in A&E getting sterri strips (stitches in old money) and glue on a rather deep and nasty wound on my little finger on...

Milton Keynes Marathon

So, the last 2 weeks or so? Week ago Thursday was another rest day. Calfs and quads were still pretty much aching from Sunday's Bungay Black Dog Marathon, plus I wanted to pick the Little One from Nursery on the Friday. As per above on Friday, picked th...

Climbing back into the saddle….

So, last week? Wednesday and Thursday’s runs were identical. 6 slow miles with the Little One in the BabyJogger and pretty much no awareness of any right calf issues. Ironically, the Little One commented that I was going too quickly for her to see Ladyb...

Still hangin' in!

So, the last 2 and half weeks.....managed only a couple of runs in the last week of March. The 1st was on the Tuesday and ended up with a 0.5 mile run followed by a 0.5 mile walk home. Made an appointment with a local physio but that wouldn't be for ano...

One step forward, two steps b...

So, this week? Not too much to report on the running front to be honest. Can count the number of miles ran in metres - it been so few! Ventured out for a run on Wednesday afternoon and managed a whopping 0.25 miles before calling it a day. Walked on for...

Not the Great Barrow Spring C...

So, this week? Another mixed bag, but without a happy ending! Picked up the Little One from Nursery on Tuesday afternoon with the BabyJogger (8.25 mile round trip) with no after affects from Sunday's Blackpool Marathon. Had to go to Bath on Wednesday fo...

Blackpool Marathon

So, last week? Well, what a week. Firstly, I must add that I tweaked my back last Sunday and that set the tone for the week. Not really sure what happened but it looks like I twisted my back whilst getting the Little One out of the BabyJogger after my s...

A good week of training.

So, this week? Spent the majority of the week up in Lincolnshire in meetings. Managed to get another recovery run in late on Tuesday afternoon. A very easy 4 miles. Didn't feel bad but my legs felt very very heavy when restarting after I had to stop and...

Heartbreak Marathon

So, last week? Monday was a rest day. Recovery 4.25 miles on Tuesday. Wednesday was a rest day due to a combination of factors - worked away for the day, couldn't really be bothered and running repairs to the quad bike! Thursday was an easy 5 miles with...

Cotswold Marathon

So, this week? Another very busy week really. Actually managed to spend the whole of Monday in the office and managed to get my car serviced and squeeze in an 8 miler at lunchtime too. A very productive day. The run was like chalk and cheese to Sunday's...

Playing catch up!

A quick catch up.So, the last 2 weeks....headed out to Cyprus 2 weeks ago. A not so nice 0320 start! A very uneventful journey out and greeted by a rain shower on exiting Larnaca Airport - a sign of the next few days weather! Managed to get out for 9 mi...
