Battling Blisters for Blades

I have set myself a very ambitious target of completing the 26 mile Thames Valley Trek in aid of Thames Valley Air Ambulance on 16 June 2018.

I currently do a little exercise, but it is generally a very gentle stroll round the block - of differing distances - with my old dog and I also try to complete 10,000 steps a day.

For the last two years I have completed the Moonlight Stroll around Oxford in aid of Sobell House Hospice but this year I have decided I’d like push myself further. The reality is that the 13 mile Trek for TVAA would be an advancement for me, but at the moment I have my sight set on 26 miles!

So, to help me with preparation I aim to follow the training plan for marathon walking on Realbuzz. I also aim to keep my blog updated to help keep me focused!

Wish me luck for my challenge!

Week 18 - I did it!!

First and foremost, I would like to thank every single person who has read and commented on my blog over the past 18 weeks.  Your words of encouragement, especially in the bleak weeks, have been so helpful and so appreciated.  Without them I don't think...

Week 17 - One week to go!

Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who gave me words of advice and encouragement last week - I really needed them and really really appreciated them. It feels very strange writing today’s blog as there is not much to say! I did my final ‘long’ traini...

Week 16 - Two weeks to go!

Where did week 15 go?  It went in a puff!  The weather last weekend was varied and unpredictable.  I tried to plan my long walk around the rain that was forecast - a big mistake.  I should have stuck to my usual routine of walking on a Sunday, but decid...

Week 14 - Four weeks to go!

Firstly, thank you so much to everyone who commented on my post last week, for your advice and for your words of support. This morning, I set out at 0545 to do a  16-mile walk. It was a lovely cool start to the day, almost chilly. By the time I got hom...

Week 13 - Five week’s to go!

Firstly, thank you to those people who continue to read my blog and give me words of encouragement. I really really appreciate them. Last Sunday, any confidence I had took a big knock. I really struggled with my long training walk and began to think th...

Week 12 - A “long” walk compl...

Once again I have been unsuccessful with my mid-week training. It’s not because I’m lazy, but with a demanding job & busy home life I simply run out of hours in the day. However, I was determined to get a long walk in today. I left home later than ...

Week 11 - No training, again

Huge congratulations to my fellow Realbuzzers for completing last week’s London marathon. I have read so many inspirational blogs this morning - thank you for sharing your stories.  My battle to train to walk (I couldn’t begin to think of running) a ma...

Week 10 - Not quite back on p...

Firstly, my thoughts are with all those I know or who I’ve followed their preparation for today’s London Marathon - the hottest on record. I hope you are all safe and well. I was out early this morning at it was scorching then. My training is not quite...

Week 9 - Back Trekking - Just

Firstly, thank you to everyone for your words of encouragement - they are greatly appreciated & it was reassuring to know that my legs wouldn’t forget what to do. I’ve had another week with no training. My pooch is okay but work was ridiculously bu...

Week 8 - Pause

I should have completed week 8 of the training plan last week and be halfway through, but sadly my dog had a stroke at the beginning of the week and, with a combination of severe sleep deprivation & a crazy busy week at work, I took the decision tha...

Week 7 - Happy Easter fellow ...

Week 7 has been concertinaed, but has been successfully completed - in fact I have over achieved! Tuesday required a 2.5mile walk in 45 minutes.  I walked 3 miles in 52:56. It was pouring with rain ☔️ and I got soaked, but it’s all part of the fun of t...

Week 6 - Happy Girl!

Week 6 has been a good week. As I entered the week I wasn’t sure whether I would do week 5 of the training plan, which I missed last week as I was poorly, or whether I would skip to week 6. The start of the week was snowy with poor driving conditions. I...

Week 5 - Written Off

You may remember that last Sunday I didn’t feel too well but did successfully complete the day’s training.  On Tuesday I really struggled with my treadmill session, then the bug hit me on Wednesday. The result is I have done no further training this wee...

Week 4 - Wobble Week!

This has been a difficult week - the first wobble of the training plan. My Tuesday training session of 45 minutes was fine, then on Thursday my back was painful when I woke. A trip to the osteopath & some rest was all it took to recover. However, I...

Week 3 - Chuffed!

Firstly, I’d like to thank everyone who takes the time to read my blog, to share advice and to give me encouragement. I REALLY appreciate it. I’m really pleased with my progress this week. I’ve pushed myself harder than the plan requires but now I’ve s...

Week 2 - Tick!

It’s been a good training week. I have been focused and committed. When it would have been so easy to say “It won’t matter if I skip today” I have cracked on and felt so positive at the end of the training session. So, this week I have done 2 x 30 minu...

Week 1 - Tick!

I have successfully completed week 1 of my training plan. Nothing too strenuous - 3 sessions of 20 minutes and 1 at 36 minutes. I walked a little further in each session than required but I thought it better to do the minutes than the kilometres. No wei...
