Andy U's VLM 2011 Running Blog

I'm running the London Marathon in April 2011, this is my training blog.

I ran a marathon about 25 years ago and have always wanted to run the London Marathon. I had an entry many years ago, but didn't run because of injury.

I haven't done that much running in the last few years, but wanted to run this year before I get too old. I started training in the summer and ran a 10K in October 2010. I've had problems with my knees, but hopefully they are getting better now.

I'm running for Children with Leukaemia. Please sponsor me here :

My trip to London 16th/17th A...

My trip to London for the marathon started on Saturday 16th when we travelled up to Greenwich and stayed in the Novotel Greenwich. Originally had planned to drive but we decided the trip on tube back to Greenwich would take almost as long to go back fro...

Expo / taper madness

Went to the gym last night for an easy session. Did 20 mins on the treadmill, had a bit of a tight hamstring, but it could just be taper madness. Went to work in London and then went to the expo this afternoon. Really glad I had the afternoon off as it'...

I'm ready

Ran 2 1/2 miles round the village before work. Thought I was taking it easy, but it was the fastest I've ever done the circuit ! Went to the physio today for a sports massage to try and make sure my legs are as ready as they can be for Sunday. I had fel...

Cambridge First

Posed for some pictures today on Midsummer Common in Cambridge with fellow Children with Leukaemia runner. Hopefully there'll be a feature on us in the paper next week. Was a beatiful day today on the Common. Then later today we did a very fast (for me)...

Almost there !

Feeling very twitchy waiting for the big day. Ran 3 miles before work yesterday. Was a bit of a sightseeing run as I haven't run round the area round work much. Found St John's Chapel in Clerkenwell and then ran along part of the Regent's canal. Was a l...

Energy levels

Yesterday did a quick 1 mile run to my children's school to pick them up. I zoomed along and was really pleased with my run. Tonight I ran home 3 1/2 miles from the station and I didn't have any energy and it was really slow. Hadn't slept very well last...

Bring it on !

Ran 12 miles yesterday. Had a bit of an ache in my left knee for the first 2 miles. For the rest of the run I was fine and didn't have any niggles at all the rest of the way. A bit of a first for me recently as I seem to have had a bit of niggle on ever...

Wind down

Easy gym session last night. Just concentrating on cross training and doing lots of stretches to get rid of the ache and stiffness in my knees. They have been a lot better the last few days and my knees have been a lot looser walking and after sitting d...

I feel fine (ish)

Easy 2 mile recovery run this morning before work after Sunday's 20 miler. Felt surprisingly fine and hardly any twinges or stiffness in my legs. Off to the Physio today for a sports massage and then not planning on doing too much running this week.

Made it !

Managed to run  20  miles today ! It was the hardest thing I've ever done but I managed it. My left knee was aching on and off for about the first 10 miles and then I didn't seem to notice it so much after about 13 miles because my legs were very tired....

Busy, busy

Quick 3 miles today after work. Its been a bit of a busy day. Its difficult fitting running in when you work full time and have a family (we have 2 6 year old girls). Didn't feel like I could spare too long today for running and didn't want to tire myse...

Busy day

Cycled 3 1/2 miles to Cambridge station this morning and got to work for 7 and then ran 3 miles from the office before starting work. Haven't ran that far before from the office. Weather was lovely and it was good to do a different run to my normal runs...

Good news !

2 mile run before work today. Not used to running at 6:30AM and it was a bit hard work as I wasn't warmed up. Went to the physio and he didn't think there was anything to worry about with my knee. They did a massage on my legs and hopefully I won't have...

Warm weather

Ran home 3.5 miles from the station tonight. Its so nice being warmer. The running home when it was -5 seems a long way away tonight. Going to physio tomorrow to check the strain in my leg I had on Saturday and my knees. Felt ok running today, but would...

Glorious day for running !

Easy week this week. Did 12 miles. It was a glorious day for running, sun out and lovely blue sky. Good temperature almost a bit too hot. It felt great to be out on a run and not feel at all cold, really feels that spring is here and the long winter of ...

Tired

Went to the gym last night but did an easy session as I felt tired as I have all week. Not going to run again now until Saturday to try and get my energy and motivation back. The weeks of training and the long Winter have got to me a bit this week. Hope...

Motivation

Ran 2 miles round the village last night. Was going to run at lunchtime but with the dull weather decided to go later.  Felt tired on the run. I'm finding it a bit difficult to keep myself motivated at the moment. It seems like its been a long dark wint...

Long way home

Good run tonight home from the station. Ran along nice footpath from Brooklands Avenue and then joined the guided busway all the way to the Trumpington Park and Ride. Knees had felt stiff earlier in the day but no problems when I got going. Then went ho...

Hard 10 miles

Ran 10 miles yesterday. Had been ill on Thursday night and not eaten much on Friday because I didn't feel like eating. Had 10 miles scheduled in for yesterday with a friend and didn't want to put it off until today. Was a bit of a struggle all the way r...

Quick run round the village

Quick run round the village today - 2 miles. Knee was stiff starting off but was fine after that. Very windy out today. Felt tired on the run, the session last night at the gym and with the running club had taken it out of me. Only 10 miles LSR this wee...

Gym / running club

Went to the running club at the gym last night for the first time. It was good and we did a varied session including some tempo runs. We covered about 5 miles. We went along some dark uneven paths so I was a bit worried about falling over and twisting m...

Nice 4 mile run home from the...

Lovely evening for running tonight. Now that the nights are getting lighter I was able to run home from the station in Cambridge along some of the off road tracks I run on at the weekend. The sun was just going down as I ran down the footpath at the bac...

18 miles

Ran just under 18 miles yesterday (17.62 in 3:01). Another long run with a fellow Children with Leukaemia runner. He ran over from Histon to Great Shelford and then we ran back together to Histon and then I ran back to home. Pace was maybe a bit too fas...

3 miles

3 miles today at lunchtime. Was very cold out and dull and overcast. I can't wait for warmer weather ! I seem to be running faster and faster these days. Covered 3 miles in 28 minutes and I wasn't really pushing myself, just running at an easyish pace. ...
