Scarlet Runner

Having been a 'lurker' on realbuzz for a couple of years now, I have finally succumbed to the nagging (erm.........'gentle persuasion' sounds better!) of various people, and come to join you. Although I'm not doing VLM, I thought I would park my blog here, as this is where I feel most at home. I hope you don't mind. A bit about me: I live in Luzern, in Switzerland; I started running more or less by accident at 40; it's gone through the odd thin patch, but 14 years later.......... I'm still running. It did take me over 12 years to get round to doing a marathon - I always maintained that it was something I didn't need or want to do, but joked that if Luzern ever got its own marathon, I would give it a go (thinking this would never happen............ but it did!) So, first marathon at 53; found it not too horrible, so did it again a year later. Definitely not too horrible! - might have to do another.........! (Probably like half marathons best, though: 15 of them at the last count.) I originally had quite an ambitious programme planned out for this year, but between work and an achilles problem, it had to be pruned down fairly radically. The blog was originally going to be called 'K31' after a race - part of the Swiss Alpine Marathon - I planned to do in July, but that idea had to be shelved, this year at least. So I ended up doing 2 half marathons instead, and have another at the end of August. That will do as an objective for now. Beyond that.......... don't know yet. (Perhaps I should also mention that I am one of the most chronically indecisive people on the planet!) And finally........... I have approximately 2 hours left to be 54, so maybe I'll write a birthday blog tomorrow. Maybe.

Since I wrote the above, not one but two birthdays have come and gone. There has been no marathon this year, but a couple more half marathons, and a few other races as well............. including, finally, K31 (which I loved.) Alas, I seem to be getting slower! - this is not how it is supposed to be! (But I'm working on it.) I've also bought an E-bike, done a lot of walking, and aqua-jogged some dull km (faut de mieux............) Endured a very long, very cold, very snowy winter, and made the most of an entirely mediocre summer; learnt to love hills (sometimes); got to grips with my Garmin; sprained my ankle, but otherwise managed to stay remarkably injury-free (even the achilles is much, much better now); lost my running protégée (but may have found another); watched some great events in fantastic surroundings; and reached my 15th Runniversary.

And now..............? What challenge shall I tackle next? I don't know. Can't decide. Plus ça change.............! (And for the first time ever, I've used the cedille on my keyboard!) But watch this space.

Aerial ballet

Not a lot of running to report this week, you may be relieved to hear. Work took priority (for once!) Also needed to take a bit of time off after the half marathon to recover from the inevitable ‘Muskelkater’. (This is another of those words for which t...

Rothenburg: the somewhat looo...

(Did you really think that was all I was going to write?!) So: half marathon no. 16, and my 3rd this year. Up at 7; Zopf and honey for breakfast (Zopf is a special plaited bread – ‘Zopf’ means ‘plait’ – traditional for weekend breakfasts here); finished...

Rothenburg: the short version

Rothenburg half marathon. Hot. Hilly. Official time: 2-01-03.00 By my watch: 2-00-50.87 So much for 'under 2 hours'. Think I'm getting too old for this caper. Off for something to eat.

Swans, and an apple

Are you making fun of me, Mr. Ford? Okay, I’ll try to curb the wordiness this time! On Monday the Hallenbad reopened after its 5 weeks’ maintenance closure, and I was there not quite as soon as the doors opened, but not long after. 3 lanes were cordoned...

Making the most of Allmend

Forgot to say that towards the end of Saturday’s run, we rescued a Salamander* from the middle of the path, where it had unwisely decided to sit. (* This is a creature that looks like a lizard, but is actually an amphibian – I don’t think they exist in ...

Heatwave over

The weather was so much pleasanter today! – sunny again, but with a lightness and freshness in the air. Even the mosquitoes have livened up and found the energy to bite me again, alas. At the beginning of the week, it was difficult to motivate myself to...

Heatwave

It’s been a rather patchy week and a half since I last wrote. (Apropos of that magnum opus: it was indeed an excessively lengthy offering, as Mr. F. pointed out - I wrote it in Word, and somehow didn’t realize quite HOW long until I transferred it. Rath...

Rigipix

Can't work out how to caption photos one by one, so will have to do it like this: 1)The natives are friendly. 2)Choice of routes the last few minutes to the summit. 3)The reward for the effort of getting there is this fantastic view. 4)View the other wa...

"And............pull!"

Hard work, this rowing! (Though J. finds time to admire the scenery.) A couple of pictures from Sarnersee.

Recent history

So: condensed version of the last few weeks before ongoing blog. After 2 half marathons in 2 weeks, and with K31 off the agenda, I decided to take a month off running to try to get my Achilles completely cured – a resolve which lasted 3 weeks. In that t...

The 'r' word...................

..............Rowing! (That's rowing as in boat, not rowing as in shouting and arguing - though there was some of that as well!) A few days ago, as we went past the Sarner See on a train, I was unwise enough to comment that I'd heard you could hire rowi...

Birthday Girl

(Though 'girl' is probably going a bit far, at 55!) A nice day, fairly low-key, but enjoyable. Work in the morning, then lunch on the sunny terrace of a local restaurant with my friends G. and A. and two new colleagues. My partner J. turned up later as ...
