I have a plan...

I started this blog when I got a ballot place in VLM 2011, I've kept it going (sometimes with biggish gaps) ever since and have changed the title occasionally to reflect how I think things are changing for me. The latest title is to promote my training plan which is a user friendly guide to training for endurance events focussing on diet.

10th anniversary of my blog

I couldn't think of a snappy title disappointingly but it does what it says on the tin! Well that last 10 years has flown by so as the saying goes then I must have been having fun! It was November 2010 when I decided to blog about my experience of tra...

London Marathon 2019 - Loved ...

Wow!  What a day!  That was just the best, thank you London.  Anyone thinking of running a marathon then you just have to do this one, I loved every step of it.  In fact I ran slowly to make it last longer so that I could savour every second. I have ne...

This could be a PB?

3 hours 27 minutes.  I was quite pleased with that time for my London Marathon experience. Yes, that is how long it took me to collect my running number and timing chip yesterday.  From leaving the house to setting foot back indoors, I managed a sub 3....

A proper taper?

I mentioned last time that I had picked up a cough and sore throat, sadly this didn't go away. As I also mentioned last time my plan, especially the actual running bit, had petered out.  I decided to run between 12 and 15k last Sunday at marathon pace ...

The best laid plans of mice a...

The phrase adapted from Robert Burns' 'To a Mouse' is well known and could well describe my training plan for London. My tried and tested sub 4 hour marathon plan has been succesful since I adopted it back in 2014, it delivered again in 2015 at Brighto...

Oakley 20

My blog posts are getting more frequent, I guess that’s because the London Marathon is getting so much closer now! This Sunday just gone was the Oakley 20, I think that this might well be my favourite race.  It’s well organised by Bedford Harriers and ...

Gade Valley 17

“I am going to have to defer my London place”.  These were my first words at the end of the Gade Valley 17 training run last Sunday.  Delivered to a lovely lady, Debs (and anyone else within earshot!) she has been through hamstring tendonitis herself an...

London Marathon training cont...

Four years since my last marathon and I have now remembered that there are no shortcuts and the training runs have to be done. Last weekend the LSR was 16 miles, this coming Sunday it’s 17 miles.  My midweek runs are now at least 10k each.  Another thi...

Sidelined. (Temporarily).

I have been struck down by a case of the dreaded man flu.  London marathon training has come to a halt.  On the plus side I have time to read a few blogs and compose my latest update from my sick bed.  Every cloud and all that… Since my last post here ...

Jersey Farm parkrun and St Ne...

Two months since my last post here so I’m well overdue for this. Being part of the realbuzz support team at the London Marathon back in April gave me such a buzz.  I hadn’t bothered entering the ballot for the last two years having had five years of re...

London Duathlon 2018

Duathlon. Running and cycling combined.  My two favourite past times (active ones at least) in one event.  What’s not to love about it?  Well, my blog from three years ago tells me that I didn’t have the greatest day there last time I tried it.  I had ...

Deep Purple

Oh wow! What can I say?  What a fabulous weekend!  Everyone, everywhere wore purple.  They ran, some fast, some not so fast but they ran. Hold on..  it’s not ‘they’ it’s ‘we’. Yes, WE ran as one for a special cause.  I read Nick’s blog earlier and heck...

Up's, Down's and the Great Og...

Ah the ups and downs of trying to keep fit eh?  The feelings that most of us are familiar with as we try and push ourselves on to new adventures and accomplishments.   There have been a few ups and downs for me since my last posting on here. Before I...

Finally I manage an update!

I have a lot to cover here as it’s been quite a while since my last post so if you are in for the long haul and going to try and get through to the end I suggest getting a nice cuppa and a sandwich at this point.  This could take some time. As it’s ove...

An update on the long term in...

I had a lovely day out supporting at the London Marathon this year, great weather (for us spectating anyway) and great to see so many of you.  I was so inspired that I have entered the ballot for 2019 so let’s see what will happen. The pink umbrella!...

(Not the) Oakley 20

Thanks to the weather I have finally got some time to sit down and write this latest piece, and also try to catch up with your blogs too. The weather does seem to have played more of a part this winter than the last few, I certainly was out on two whee...

The first weekend in March

‘Let’s hope that there is no snow to interfere with my plan’ is how I finished the post last time.  Well there has been snow and ice this week although that is not the only reason that I have not run a step this week.  My right achilles has given me gr...

Hillingdon Half Marathon. Th...

I messed up the dates a bit, I planned to do the Gade Valley 17 as a precursor to the Oakley 20 but also entered the Hillingdon Half marathon which I thought was the week before Gade. Not so.  Which is why I found myself the only Strider on a cold brig...

I had forgotten how hard runn...

Now back home after the warm weather training it was time to get focussed on running again. The last month had been all about parkrun but running 5k isn’t going to get me too far in my pursuit of this year’s Oakley 20 hoodie.  Time to start increasing ...

Torrens parkrun

Having left WA on Thursday, I arrived in Adelaide SA and brought with me some proper English summer weather.  Apparently, it was 40c before I turned up, that soon dropped to 21c and frequent showers, no sign of the sun at all. That meant that the lates...

Lake Joondalup parkrun

Another new (for me) venue for the latest parkrun.  This time Lake Joondalup, located in a park next to the lake itself.   Joondalup is a northern suburb of Perth in WA, this parkrun has been established for around 3 years now and there was a larger cro...

2017 summary and two parkruns

It’s my last post of 2017 and time to remember what happened during the past year. A check of Strava tells me that I have cycled 2,652 miles in over the last 12 months and run a total of 201 miles, most of that in the last couple of months since I star...

Another new thing!

As I mentioned last time I had an MRI scan appointment at Hemel Hempstead General Hospital, that has happened and I am now awaiting the outcome.  Whatever it is I won’t let it stop me. If you have read any of my previous posts you will know that I do l...
