Why DO we do it?

Posted on: 14 Jan 2020

I haven't been for a run in 10days. There's been a variety of reasons, mainly just too much going on & too many family demands. I have to admit that there have been little windows of opportunity when I could have gone out & haven't and now I'm regretting those decisions because I feel rotten. Like down in the dumps, pants, miserable, flat kind of rotten. It's not because I haven't been active - I averaged 14,500 steps per day over the last 7days, but it just isn't the same. So today, despite the stormy conditions, Louie, my daughter & I went for a run. Now compared to most of you out there it was not very much - we did about 3k - and it wasn't very fast - it took us 27mins - but it felt soooo good. Not necessarily every moment - the rain was like daggers & the wind was wild, after all - but almost all of it! I feel more alive now than I did all last week and more alert too. So, I guess, when push comes to shove, that's why we do it. It energises us. It gives us a buzz. It makes us feel real. So next time that window of opportunity is about to slip through my fingers I need to remember all those things & grasp it before it slips away.
