My first marathon here I come

April 28th 2009 - that day will go down in history as either:

a) the day I committed my body to an early grave  a healthy challenge

or

b) the day I should have been committed to an asylum

I'll know come 25th April 2010! Either way, I'm committed to completing the course!

I took the plunge to guarantee myself a place in the Virgin London Marathon 2010 on that very day at 2pm.  I actually registered for a ballot place the day before, but to ensure I'll be running, I signed on the dotted line for my charity place!

I've chosen to run for Scope. They do lots amazing work with disabled people. Scope enables disabled people to have the same opportunities as non-disabled people so that they can live fulfilling lives.  As I work for Scope, I've met many people who have had their lives changed because they have been supported by us.  I'm running the marathon for Scope because although the marathon has the potential to change my life, the money I raise will go on to help change the lives of many more people.

Although I've been running for many years, I have never ever run beyond a half marathon.  The London Marathon will be the biggest challenge for me to date! I'm actually extrememly excited about it right now, but at the same time I am somewhat filled with trepidation.  Yesterday, I decided I'd read about about what happens to the body when you put it through 26.2 miles,  it scared me a little and I did wonder why I was doing this, but it's made me think more about the importance of the training and preparation in the months running up to it.

I'm probably more concerned about having to raise £1700 for Scope than the actual 26.2 miles.

Decided I'd write a blog to mark my two personal challenges - the running and the fundraising - in order to maintain my motivation right up to the day.  Hopefully there will be lots of people to share tips and learnings with.

I've set up my Virgin Giving - Sponsor me page; all sponsorship will be much appreciated.  If that doesn't work for whatever reason, you can always use JG - but they take more commission!!!

Goals leading up to 25 April 2010

10k - PB 52:59 - sub:50 // Half marathon - PB 02:02:09 - sub:2:00 // London Marathon - Get me round!

I'm back!

Hi folks, hope you are all exceedingly well and you’ve been enjoying the glorious weather.   I'd like to claim that I brought the glorious weather back with me, but I'd be lying.   Although I had glorious weather most of the time I was away, I pretty mu...

I made my mark in history

Where do I start? Had a pretty decent night’s sleep, early night but woke at 1am and it still wasn't time but the fell back into another deep sleep. When the radio came on, there was no reluctance to get up. Changed and porridge eaten and off I went. O...

What I'll be wearing

I think I've worn myself out from over excitement.  I'm tired!  lol  Here's what I'll be wearing... ....and don't forget, you can track me tomorrow by texting RUN to 83040 or via Adidas marathon tracker on Facebook.  http://apps.facebook.com/marathon-t...

As ready as I'll ever be! :o)

Yes, me again!!! Whoop whoop!  Only 3 sleeps to go!!! Went for my test run tonight, just to check everything was in working order.  Didn’t bother taking the G Man, as it was literally just a quick loop round the dock, about 2 miles.  Everything is in go...

VLM souvenirs

Yes, I'm back from my little jaunt to the Expo.  It wasn't as exciting as I thought it might be.  I'm not sure what I was expecting, but anyhow...there was a huge queue but thankfully not for my number!! I got seen to straight away but like a div, I jus...

Marathon mania is making me m...

...it’s also causing me to favour alliteration... I’m sad to report that on Monday morning, I woke up with nothing less than marathon mania!!!!  I am marathon mad! Mad, I say, totally stark bonkingly mad!!!  I had a very unproductive Marathon Mad Monday...

Yes, yes...I’m resting...bore...

Hello all.  Thank you for all your wise words and wishes.  I didn’t go for my 8 miler today, instead I did a 30 mins test yesterday, I wanted to check how tired it left me.  At least this way, I'd have Sunday to sleep.  Legs are working fine, chest was ...

Still grounded

And not by the ash, but rather this rotten cold.  I do reckon this is the worse cold I’ve had for at least 5 years.  Not only is it irritating, but it’s draining my energy faster than leaving the headlights on overnight drains the car battery. Coughing ...

Germs.. make sure you're wear...

So after Sunday's run, I wake up on Monday with a banging headache and sound like I've been smoking 50 a day for the past 30 years.  It's not flu, just the worst cold and cough you could wish for.  Made it into work as had a billion things to do, on top...

Tapering a little too seriously

I think I’ve taken the taper a little bit too much to heart.  I’ve not done a great deal this week.  Admittedly, when I was due to run on Thursday I wasn’t sure if I was on the brink of flu or whether it was just marathonitis.  I did feel achey and hot ...

Is there a cure?

Time is ticking by and I am starting to develop all sorts of marathon related “ailments”. I have big time OCD which means I have to think about the marathon before I make any decision.  It’s the first thing I think about in the morning, the last thing i...

All aboard the taper train – ...

Been a bit of a strange week; was meant to run 7 miles on Thursday but managed about 1.5 miles before deciding cross training would be a wiser move.  Not only was the running extreeeemely slow, I was running a bit lopsided – not good for injury preventi...

A special thank you to my legs

After my mammouth sleep on Sunday night, I woke up on Monday refreshed!  And had I not been a bit sore, I would have completely forgotten the ordeal from the previous day.  I went into work and had the following conversation with my colleague, Tom, who ...

20 mile run from hell with a ...

Today’s run was not one little bit as I expected, but what it was, was a test of my mental and physical ability to run this marathon. Hemel 20, which is a marathon training run put on by Gade Valley Harriers (not a race) is anything but a stroll in the ...

A woman possessed

Shin no longer sore, but still doing all the preventative measures.  Not safe till I’m over that finish line!  So did 40 mins cycling on Tuesday, followed by 30 lengths hard core swimming in a 33m pool, alternating 2 front crawl with 2 breast stroke on ...

erring on side of caution

Quick one today. Not running much this week as going to focus on cross training tonight (gym stuff, bike, etc) and tomorrow (swimming), will probably do my Friday run though.  Shin (just the left one) felt a bit sore yesterday and I am super paranoid ab...

Chasing dog tails

So apparently sleep running is not a skill I’m likely to be able to perfect, fortunately for me I got a great night’s sleep and have since had more nourishing sleep, so all is good in my world...for the moment anyway.    We are living the rock and roll ...

Sleep running...

...is a skill I need to develop.  Far too tired today but forced myself to run home from work.  7 miles to get through, first mile for warm up but as it’s downhill, it’s not too bad. Then ran as fast as pavements and self would allow – it’s not even abo...

Click click click...

...that was the sound of my joints earlier this evening... but let’s go back to Monday first. Seem to have recovered reasonably well from the 20 miler as woke up on Monday feeling pretty good.  Didn’t want to speak too soon as I have been susceptible to...

Why stop when I’m having such...

Set off this morning with the intention of doing 18 miles.  It was my first time running this distance on my own so put my ipod shuffle in my pocket incase I needed it later in the run.  Was worried I might come back slightly insane but hey ho, some peo...

My Piriformis and Eddie’s Ice...

Every now and again I get this darn pain in my butt.  Some of you may remember it first came on last September.  Today, it was irritating me so I’ve been massaging my piriformis all day, and I’ll even embarrassingly admit to sitting on my Vaseline tin e...
So my knee seems to be ok two days following Bath.  Hurrah! This therefore means I’m back on the training band wagon that we are all chugging along on.  Decided I’d do a lunchtime run as I needed the evening for various chores. Probably would have been ...

Barf arf or should that be 13...

Ran it, didn't push it and survived. Chilly start and didn't get off to a good one when we were met by a massive queue just to get a ticket for train from Bristol to Bath. The staff gave in eventually and told everyone who prebooked to go straight throu...
This little baby just won me £350 towards my fundraising target.  I think I’m more or less there now!  Yipee!    A friend of my mum’s donated it to me to enter into an origami competition being held by one of my suppliers. Needless to say, we won!  Ya...
