running home

This run started Dec 05; in the early weeks & months could only manage to jog/walk, mostly walking. Has been a struggle and would never have believed that I actually could have got this far. Have run GNR 06, 07, 08, 09 & 11, Edinburgh Marathon 07 & 11, London Marathon 09 then finally reached the Hebridean Challenge. Proud to have been able to have run all five Hebridean Half Marathons in 2008, Stornoway, Benbecula, Barra, Skye & Harris. My journey should really have ended in the Western Isles 2008 but have been left with unfinished business and a world of possibilities.

Callanish Stones Marathon...L...

Everything fell into place for the journey to the stones. It was always going to end this way; it just took time for me to change, to be able to understand, forgive and allow those I love to move forward with their lives. My journey to the stones would...

quiet before the storm...

Why so quiet I can hear ringing in my ears…well, mostly it’s been a time for reflection as this leg of the journey draws to a close. The training had actually been going extremely well; I was running 4 of my 5 runs every week with other runners often at...

mad dogs and englishmen...

Am now totally focused on finishing this Run Home; week 11 of marathon training is well underway and have completed a total of 51 runs. To date have only dropped 2 runs, not through injury, was just to tired for the runs to be of any real benefit and co...

Pocklington 10K

Since my last post have run a further 8 times, 2 on the treadmill and the remaining 6 on the road. Longest run of 11.30 miles that I have to say went surprisingly ok. Last weeks Park Run was an easier effort largely due to tiredness and fatigue. The sur...

insomnia...

A real mix bag last week…managed to get in two treadmill sessions: Tue 15 Apr, 4 miles, 28:48 Wed 16 Apr, 5 miles, 38:01 …before a bout of insomnia kicked in leaving me wasted and unable to train for 24 hours. My regular doctor agreed that the amitripty...

...don't think just run...

Much better week this week; 5 runs completed hitting the schedule right on the nose. Met with a neurologist early in the week and he confirmed that I do actually have a brain, did doubt it for a while; but he would like to scan my head just to be sure b...

17 weeks...

The week is done and I seem to have been fighting tiredness every day. It’s hardly surprising as have completed 5 runs and one 45 min spinning session. Figured have simply tried to hard this week. The feeling of nausea has improved but the headaches and...

sick & dizzy...

The return to running came quickly after Malta but my health has unfortunately been steadily in decline. Can’t say for certain what’s wrong yet just know I've had enough of how it makes me feel. Couldn’t bring myself to post for the last few weeks but f...

Malta Marathon

Two months has passed and not a day goes by without me thinking about Running Home. Posts have been written but never shared and thankfully have found a different path to work through the gloom of injury and ill health. The injuries and issues are still...

Frostbite 30 - DNS

Am in a dark place at the moment…the past 20 days have seen a grand total of 13 miles of not very pretty running. The body failed me this weekend; I was willing to run Frostbite 30 with little training to speak of, but alas it was a DNS – Did Not Start!...

Guy Fawkes 10

It was 10 days before the running shoes had another airing. Remained totally positive as every day the aches and pains improved and my strength returned. Has been a real case of 4 steps forward and 5 back as after the first couple of runs the pain in my...

Yorkshire Marathon 2013

The race has totally wiped me out; my own stupid fault really as I had not been looking after myself in the lead up to the race. I’d run out of some medication on the Saturday and am now paying the price. So for 72 hours post race have been laying low t...

Toe the line...

With a week till race day my final preparations have been rubbish. Picked up a cold which thankfully was only bad for a couple of days; am confident it should be just about clear by next weekend. My left ankle has however been a real issue. The week’s e...

why would I not want to do th...

The conditions on Saturday were once again superb on the Knavesmire for some quick running at York Park Run. I was feeling much better than last week so after a quiet warm up settled close to the front, theory was to be pulled along for a few minutes by...

All roads in Scotland lead to...

The battle with constant tiredness and fatigue is dominating my life at the moment. I would like to think I understand the cause and appreciate there is little I can do to improve things…so life marches on and provided I keep eating and sleep well the r...

assult on 3:30...

Seem to always start the week totally exhausted and eager to get back to work for rest. Secretly am enjoying my weekend running efforts at the moment as they are a diversion away from all the jobs round the house that I’ve been avoiding for so long. Jul...

life in the old dog!

Yesterday ran a steady 5 miles on the treadmill and was interesting to note my legs didn’t feel as heavy post LSR as in previous weeks. Felt achy and tired but was still able to hold a good pace reasonably comfortably. My intention today was to repeat t...

Frostbite 30...

Saturday was my first free running effort at Park Run for many weeks and also my first outing for my crisp new Hoka’s. Found them rather springy with the extra cushioning and surprisingly wanting (them and me) to run quicker. Pushed the effort and was d...

York Oggie Run...

The training is marching on and the miles are flashing by. Aches and pains are constant but for now seem to be managing things pretty well. Biggest challenge has been fatigue, just seem to be tired all the time…have discovered this is simply a symptom o...

Recovery Week?

Without wanting to tempt fate…the worrying situation with my left foot has continued to improve. The pain is always there niggling away but the main difference is that running with it is getting easier and last weeks effort reflects this. I ran Tue 5 mi...

reasons for running...

Nine weeks without a post is unforgivable…so much has happened and to be totally honest my injury woes were best kept to myself. The torn calf has all but repaired and a consistent return to running (albeit slow) came on the 4th Jul. I wrote off the fir...

no regrets...

Will not post again until I can see a return to running with no calf issues....right...well that’s what I said thinking this would be a quick fix followed by a swift return to running. Hmm…today is day 10 post-race and post-stupidity and have just about...

Skye Half

Well that didn’t go to plan! My whistle stop trip to Skye was brilliant but the race just didn’t pan out this time…do wonder sometimes whether the old bones are trying to tell me something. Totally misjudged the drive north and found myself driving 446 ...

nothing to loose...

Totally wiped out today…after a weeks holiday doing little more than decorating at home am glad to get back to work for a rest. Three weeks have slipped by since my last post and its sure been a training roller coaster. By design I pushed myself hard on...
