Flora London Marathon 2009

My name is Neil Williams, and I'm from Ipswich in Suffolk.

This will be my 3rd attempt at a full marathon, but my first London

As I managed to get a ballot place in the FLM I'll use the opportunity to raise some money for a charity. I've decided to run for Sense, one of the leading charities working with deafblind children

This blog will help motivate me during the many miles of training I have to get through

Here's to an injury free few months!

Race day

"A gentle walk to the start is a good warm up for a marathon" someone once told me. Lewisham DLR station to Greenwich park is all uphill. A steep hill. We got quite a sweat on walking to the start. Too much energy used and it was getting warm. Too warm....

Preparation for Race Day!

All that practice went to waste. The hotel in the city is great, but no food. Saturday night we travelled to the FLM finish site to arrange a place to meet post race. Tube, bit of walking, not too bad. I really wanted to rest but needs must. Decided to ...

Pemultimate blog

Sorry it's been a while since my last blog. I haven't felt like blogging, I feel almost sad writing this. My first ever blog was almost 5 months ago, I was full of planning and preparation. trying to choose a charity, nervous about all the training, wou...

7 days to go - who's nervous?

Nearly there. Last mid length run today (10 miler from home to East Bergholt the long way round). Training done, lots of miles in the bank, fueling strategy in place and practiced. Race strategy will be simple - follow the RunnersWorld 9 min mile pacer ...

UCL - bring on Barca

sweet! If only adidas made Chelski shirts like running shirts - I'd use them all the time

All dressed up and too far to go

Who trusts the weather forecast? I'd planned my last LSR today. Somewhere betweem 17 and 20 miles. Got up early, looked outside, cloudy and drizzle. BBC weather forecast said the east would be cloudy, showery and 10-11 degrees. So, out I went in a long ...

Slow week - getting nervous

Been an odd week this week, schedule has gone to pot! School holidays + a back log of u18 fuxtures catching up on me. Training - 5.5 miles on Sunday (really just a loosener after Saturday in Hyde Park) and a 6 mile tempo run Monday followed by a mega ru...

18.5 miles in the Hyde Park s...

Went down to London today (or is it up to London, always up to the capital?). Sense laid on a training day for their running team with a couple of pro's to talk to, and a run in Hyde Park. Made a real change from the lonely Suffolk country roads, where ...

3 hours for 20.87 miles...

...in the cold wind and rain. I'm very pleased I'm feeling more confident about a beating 4:30 and I wonder if sub 4 is possible? No, let's be realistic. My only marathon finish was 4:48. I settle for sub 4:30! Changed my iPod playlist. I've been liste...

Only 4 weeks to go...too many...

3 weeks more serious running and another seriously eating pasta. I can cope Training still progressing. Followed last Saturday's good 18 miler by taking 'er indoors shopping with the kids fro Mother's Day. Shopping with 2 teenage boys. She had fun, not...

Back on track

Planned an 18 mile LSR yesterday but a little nervous after this week's sickness. A day's rest and proper lunchtime meals (lamb chops on Thursday and steak Friday). I felt I had energy. I ran well within myself and didn't look at the time, just checked ...

Tired, worn out, ill?

I'm not sure if I've picked up a bug, eaten something bad or I'm just worn out. First, the training. Since the W'ham 20 a couple of Sundays ago I ran a 40 mile week last week with a very quick 5 miles on the Thursday (well quick for me, 38:26) and a 17....

20 miles in under 3 hours!

The Wymondham 20 had me a little nervous all week. I needn't have worried Weather was good - chilly breeze but the rain stayed away. Good crowd. Chatty and cheerful marshalls. The course was very fair. One downhill on the 8 mile loop, but the matching u...

Should you taper for a traini...

Quiet week this week. I've had one eye on the Wynondham 20 coming up on Sunday so decided to get my miles in early and do a little tapering (e.g stuff my face with pasta!) 6 miles on the tready Monday, joined up with the Capel Cheetahs for 4.5 on Tuesda...

Nike Max Moto 5s - RIP

What a week! Weather has calmed down so football is back. Coaching and matches. This leaves less time to fit in any running, even though I'm in the sub 20 min 5k club Managed to squeeze a 6.8 miler around Ipswich on Thursday 20th, and set out for a 15 ...

Shhh...don't tell Paula

I've suspected my Nike+ has been lying to me for a while. On the road it measures long e.g. 12.44 miles in my last HM race. On the tready it measures short. Which is where my cheating comes in... I dashed to the gym for a quick 5K last night, and ran wh...

Another week - another 33 miles

I can't believe it's been a week since my last blog. I can't have been that busy, most football was cancelled so I was only coaching one night. Mind you, Monday night in Ipswich were the coldest training sessions I've taken. Strong wind, sleet, and pudd...

Gt Bentley Half Marathon - no...

Another Sunday long run, no ostriches this week but another race in Essex. After the fun and muddy games in Benfleet I was a little nervous. And my knee is still sore. And I've still got mud in some of my gear! I needn't have worried. The race was a bre...

Chafing update!

Getting worse before it can get better. Not bad after Tuesday's tempo run, but after a lunchtime run around town on Wednesday I was particularly sore. ...and bled through my work shirt when I got back to the office!   Elastoplast spray considered a succ...

Did we have snow?

If we did, it disappeared very quickly. At least around here. But, what's been happening in the world of FLM training? After I fell off the wagon late last week, I got back on and caught up the miles on Sunday. Not intentionally, just went out, felt goo...

Forgive me blog readers, for ...

I skipped training yesterday. I know, I'm a whimp, I'm sorry, but I just needed the rest. I think the race on Sunday took it out of me. I managed a weights session on Monday and a 4.5 mile tempo run on Tuesday afternoon. My plan was for a 5 mile gentle ...

Mud is good for the skin, right?

The Benfleet 15. Advertised as "multi terrain". In reality it's grass, puddles, gravel and mud. Lots of wet, slippery, clinging mud. Oh, and a little bit of road. Not quite what I expected. A lot of people run this race year after year, it's very popula...
