Over the hill for Breakthrough

I'm taking part in the BUPA Great Manchester Run 2008 on the 18th of May  to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.  I was 50 last December and have never done any distance running before.   I am motivated to do  this for my sister-in-law who has recently been through treatment for breast cancer.  The effort of attempting my first ever 10k run is nothing compared to that of dealing with the diagnosis, treatment and ongoing monitoring of the disease. Please join me in supporting Breakthrough Breast Cancer, details of the work you will be helping to fund can be found at www.breakthrough.org.uk There are a number of challenges ahead in training, fund raising and maintaining this blog. If you would like to sponsor me it's really easy - you can donate online by credit or debit card at the following address:   http://www.justgiving.com/nickfletcher1   All donations are secure and sent electronically to Breakthrough Breast Cancer.  If you are a UK taxpayer, Justgiving will automatically reclaim 28% Gift Aid on your behalf, so your donation is worth even more.

Managed it

Can't believe that its over. The last few months have seemed to be focused on todays run and I now feel a bit sad its over. Today was a great experience that will take me a few days to fully appreciate. Quite apprehensive ...

Almost there

Hard to believe that the run is almost here. Quite a reality check when the large envelope comtaining the race number and details landed last week. All looks very serious from this close. Its a bit like being back at school before an exam when yo...

On the road at last

Finally braved the roads for the first time last week for a couple of miles. My main concern before starting out was with pacing myself. All my running previously had been in the gym, set the treadmill to a speed and just keep up. On the road ver...

Back to the treadmill

Bit of a shock to the system getting back into training as I have been away for a fortnight to Florida. Decided to take it relatively easy this week with just a couple of runs to get back in the swing. I thought the weather would have...

House

Had quite a hectic time since my last post.. On Tuesday it was Easter Bunny Bingo at the primary school my daughter used to attend and I am still a governor at. For the last few years they have had the dubious pleasure of me calling the numbers. ...

Anyone for tennis

My wife and daughter are both mad about tennis and we had a trip to Wimbledon for a look around the museum and tour of the grounds. All very interesting as you get to go behind the scenes and into areas normally restricted to the players. We saw ...

Escapology for beginners

Why is it you never have a camera when you need one. Finished my session in the gym the other day and was in the changing room. A guy then came in wearing one of those highly technical second skin type tops all the footballers are now...

Onwards and upwards

I mentioned in my last post that I would be attempting a run involving an incline and plucked up courage to attempt it on Wednesday. The treadmills at the gym have a feature that I was told would allow me to set a timed run with a few...

From charity to chariots

Had a tremendous response to the fundraising email I sent out on wednesday. A big thank you to everyone who has sponsored me so far, its very much appreciated. Since I circulated the email I've also had numerous comments and plenty le...

Computers !!!

First of all a big thanks to the people who have been kind enough to leave comments. Barbara is doing really well having completed her treatment in the first half of last year and has had good results from follow ups to date. I must h...

First post

How do people ever write a novel ? Its hard enough thinking of a few words to put down. Just completed the initial admin side of the run. Finished the online sponsor form at www.justgiving.com/nickfletcher1 this morning and set up the...
