EVERY DAY YOU DON'T DO YOUR TRAINING PROPERLY IS AN IF ONLY DAY

Strokeman to Marathonman

In 2004 aged 42, I had a Stroke which left me unable to walk for several days and changed my life forever. After several months recovering, I found running. Numerous 10k's and several Half Marathons followed and in April 2007 I completed the London Marathon in 4 hours 28 minutes and proved to myself and others that there was 'Life after Stroke'. I raised £5,000 for Stroke charities in the process.

Further marathons followed in 2008 (Edinburgh 4.35), London in 2010 (4.20), Rotterdam (4.04 PB) & Mablethorpe (4.54 PW!) in 2011 (A PB & a PW in the same bloody year!) and finally Hull 4.28 in 2012.

Unfortunately my left knee is now riddled with Arthritis and my right achilles is not a happy bunny either. I probably should not even be considering another Marathon - but sod it you only live once?

It is either get fit again or the "Road to Perdition" This is Ruddy's last marathon stand.

My wife and 3 kids are and always will be my motivation.

165 Days

18th September my last blog!  Back just in time to wish you all the best for next week! If it is your first London, try and drink it all in, its a wonderful day. I last blogged a week before the Hull Marathon, training severely restricted by an achill...

Not brave enough to pull out....

Things have not gone well since my last blog in August, my achilles has steadilly got worse, my training more miss that hit. I don't feel at all prepared to run a marathon. It was D day yesterday. If I could not complete my final taper run distance of ...

A broken man...self inflicted...

So, after resting my Achilles, missing last Thursday's run and park run with a sports massage on Friday thrown in to loosen off my calf, Sunday arrived, long run day.  I set off around 8 am with no confidence at all. I could "feel" the Achilles but not...

Hit the buffers............

Its been my busiest time of year at work, so it been another couple of weeks since my last blog. When things get tough, I am usually dragged back here, because it allows me to get things off my chest (which is good) and hopefully move foreward........ ...

Time to refocus

Not blogged for nearly 2 weeks (really busy at work, year end) but I will take a moment to refocus. Since a blogged last, I have fitted in long runs of 17.5 & 18 miles. After a "step back" week this week, (15 miler Sunday?) I have the first of 2 tw...

Half Way

It was amiss of of me the other day to not note that I am half way through my 20 week training plan. My longest run to date is 15 miles (two weeks ago) and I have been averaging around the 25-30 mile a week mark without actually going over thirty miles....

Cream Crackered

After 15 miles last Sunday and 2 half Marathon distance runs in the previous 2 weeks, I though I would have a "cut back" week this week. I only ran Tuesday (Treadmill 10k) and saved myself for this weekend. I gave myself a three part challenge, I raced ...

The hard yards have definitel...

Sunday, 15 miles to do. Out the door before 8.30...it was not early enough, bonkers warm for running by 8. I did my usual trying to find last minute things to sort (to avoid going out) but finally did shoe horn myself out the door. The first dozen miles...

Hull 10K

I do like a run around my home city with no traffic...even if it costs £28.00! (Its for charidee shurrup). I don't really like running in 26-28 degree temperatures though! That was tough. I was hoping for sub 55 minutes, but given the conditions, 55.31 ...

To busy to blog?

Not delibrately avoided blogging, just been busy..honest. Today is the last day of week four (of Hull Marathon Training) and I last blogged in week one. So far so good, I completed 11 x 10 min miles this morning (twas a bit warm) to end the week with 2...

Got to be happy with that

So I went into this weekend with little confidence in my calfs, but (without taking things for granted that they are fully healed) I came out of it alot happier. Saturday Hull parkrun (very flat) results for event #378. Your time was 00:27:42. (8.49 mi...

having a another go............

It must be a while since I was on here, Realbuzz have been sending me "we miss you" e-mails! .....and the format of the blogs has changed as well!! So, last blog (26th March) Pulled calf, out for a couple of weeks turned into torn calf out for 5-6 week...

............2 steps back

A quick update, I am tired! A week last Saturday I completed my training half including my park run, but managed to pull my calf at mile 9 and that was sore for a few days, I missed one one run, trained hard in the gym and the did a treadmill mill 5 on ...

Training Half Marathon

With several 10 milers behind me recently, (training for the 'Snake Lane 10') I thought it was time I got a half in. I have decided that if I want to train for a marathon again, 3 runs a week it is and if I want to keep running the park run (hoping for ...

If you want something you hav...

I have been here before...many times. The elephant in the room, my belly. My dentist will testify to my sweet tooth. It is 5 years since I last ran a marathon. Last years Humber Bridge half was my first in about 3 years. I turned 55 last week and I aint...

Avoiding the second one.........

Did any of you watch the Andrew Marr programme on Beeb 2 earlier in the week? He did not get emmotional, but I did! When I had my Stroke, I had all the same symtoms, I now have all the same fears! I was just so much luckier than him, mine was not as bad...

Another tough one - the madne...

Since last week? 6 on Tuesday, 3 on Thursday, park run Saturday, then a tough 9 yesterday. Last week's pulled hamstring, turned out to be a thigh pull and I had a repeat performance at the weekend. About 3.5 k into the park run, it "went" again. Despite...

Why was I able to run today?

Not a clue. I 'twanged' a hamstring yesterday at park run. My time has not been under 26.30 for a while and I realised yesterday I was running close to it. 30 meters to go I put my foot on the accelerator (yeah right) and my hamstring did not like it on...

I like a day off............work

When most people have a day off, they usually have at least a little lie in? Not me, I cannot think of a better way to start the day than running! So I did, out the door at 7.30 and by 8.35 I had 6.5 miles under my belt and was heading for the shower. M...

Moving On

I am no where near fit enough to run 10 miles  at the minute, but the one race I have booked is a 10 miler at the end of February.....I had better get moving then. My calf was quite sore Monday, but somehow I stretched, massaged and coaxed it into runni...

2 in a week

So after 10 days off letting a calf strain settle down, I am very slowly easing back into running this week. A mile on Monday, mile and half yesterday and 2 today. All 3 were at a gentle 5 mph to be sure my calf did not complain. So far so good. Exercis...

I really am hopeless this time!

Forgive me I have sinned, it is 207 days since I last blogged! Apologies! Quick recap: Lots of niggly injuries, one race, the East Hull Harriers Boxing Day 10k (58.12), 12 park runs, still fat but trying to lose weight and a bit older. Oh and one race ...

Really....

4th July since I last blogged, I am bloody hopeless! What have I been up to? Only one race I think, the tough hilly Walkington 10k in 56 somesthing. Injuries? I have had both a hamstring problem which I still need to be careful with, but nearly over and...
