It Keeps Me On The Streets

Ran my first marathon in London 2007. The euphoria overtook the pain (I hear childbirth is similar) and I signed up again in 2009.  Unfortunately, my legs had other plans and rebelled 3 months into training, leaving me with an injured calf and severe case of the hump.  'Luckily' I was able to defer my place to 2010 so here I am again, staring down the barrel of 4 months of aches, pains, exhaustion and ravenous hunger. I want to do this, yes, really I do...

Onwards and upwards!

Having spent a couple of days feeling a bit flat and disappointed with myself, I decided the best solution was to set myself a new challenge. So today I signed up for the Kingston 10k on the 6 June and the Ranelagh Richmond 10k on the 20th June. Any tak...

That hurt.

3 hours 53 mins.   Feeling disappointed, to be honest, as I was aiming for sub 3.45. Yesterday didn’t go too well, partly due to my own stupidity.    All intention of meeting fellow bloggers at the Lucozade stand went out the window in an effort to find...

Does feeling excited make me ...

1 1/2 days to go. Bring it on! RRROOOOOOOOAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Final visit to physio yesterday. He produced a plastic ruler thing with a circle on the end and started twisting my leg about, evidently measuring something. Not entirely sure w...

Please make it go away

Freaking out big time right now.   Woke up thoroughly depressed having dreamed of telling Gwyneth Paltrow IT Band problems had forced me to pull out for the second year in a row. Took a good few seconds to realised it was actually a dream & I haven’...

Ducks In A Row

Apologies for nil by keyboard recently. It's been a case of if you've nothing good to say, say nothing. My week went as follows: Monday: Rest Tuesday: Attempt a run. IT band starts hurting at 2.5 miles. Stop. Curse. Fall off the wagon and drown my sorro...

Water on the brain

Sooooo did another mile swim yesterday instead of a run. If I wasn't so totally rubbish on a bike, with all this swimming I could knock off a triathlon before breakfast. Last time I ventured out on a bike to wobble round Windsor Great Park (I don't allo...

Theeeey’re Heeeeree!!!!!!

The first Marathon posters have appeared on the Tube.  Oh God, it’s real. It’s not just a figment of my over-active imagination.  But for those who have seen the posters, what the heck does Nelson’s column have to do with it?? It isn’t en route. Or if i...

Please, no more.

I'm broken. Mentally and physically. Today was in my top 3 hardest ever runs. Started feeling a bit ill yesterday. Sore throat & sore glands. Didn't sleep very well either; had night sweats, which were thoroughly unpleasant. Wake up feeling complete...

Marathon schmarathon. I'd ra...

Aloha blogisphere Not written much recently. Been feeling a bit down in the dumps. The start line seems so near and yet so far. Last Sunday's 20 miler really took it out of me.   Monday was a rest day and talk about Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. Even m...

When in doubt, throw NASA at ...

Ooops, not blogged for a while. Wednesday was 8 miles scheduled.  Ran home from work and the calf pretty much held up till the last mile when it started to niggle a bit. Thursday was 5 miles scheduled but I cut it short at 3.5 as the calf wasn't feeling ...

Big Brother

So whilst my physio is a secret psycho, he also knows what he's talking about. Wake up ridiculously early on Monday morning (why have the clocks not gone back yet? who's in charge? don't make me write a letter...) and as I can't sleep, roll out of bed a...

I've glimpsed Hell - and it f...

On Friday and Saturday the calf really doesn't feel good. Stiff, tender, painful walking downstairs. Decide I must have torn it slightly. After deferring from injury last year, this send me to the bottom of the pits of despair.  There were tears, that's...

That Sinking Feeling...

Horse muck and a pile of festering pigeon’s poo.  Is about the sum of my current sentiments.    10 miles last night. 10 MILES!  ON A SCHOOL NIGHT!  You know a run is stupidly long when you have to slip a post-it note with directions in your pocket. Warm...

Holiday, ooh yeah, ooh yeah!

I'm not dead, I've been on staycation.  To Sittingbourne, via Couch End. Did 3 miles last Saturday. What a lovely day!  Spring had finally sprung and, mid-run, cue drum roll, angels with harps, a full chorus singing Carmena Burana... I STOPPED AND TOOK ...

Dissent In The Ranks.

5 miles last night - 1 mile warm up/down & 3 miles brisk. Boy it was tough. No juice left in the pins. Creak and wheeze through the '3 miles brisk' section and somehow, on willpower alone, average 8.05.  Tonight 7 miles are scheduled, including 1.5 ...

Food, not so glorious Food...

Really bored of feeling hungry.  Just eaten brimming bowl of fruit salad, yoghurt and museli all mixed up together and it barely touched the sides.  Now I want biscuits but I’m at work and there are no biscuits.  And it’s 3 hours 4 mins till lunch.   Ye...
Again, nearly a week has flown by. Speedwork on Wednesday (yuk yuuuuuk but I did it). 7 mile run home on Thursday where I forgot my pedometer which was REALLY ANNOYING as we are doing this fitness challenge at work where the person with the most steps t...

Mind Over Matter

Saw Mr Physio last night for a massage.  Funny how 'massage' is such a loose term.  In his interpretation, it involves methodically digging the point of his elbow deep into my rear end for 15 mins per cheek.  Accompanied by me biting chunks out the mass...

Rain. And Shoes.

Not blogged for a ridiculous amount of time.  I HAVE been running, honest guv.  Just not had time to fit everything in.   Today the sun is shining.  That is just evil after my last 2 runs have been cold, sodden trudges in the driving rain.  Did my long ...

Tired, tired, oh man am I tir...

My legs hurt. I forgot just how cream crackering this running lark can be. 4 miles slow yesterday. Weirdly, these short runs take forever. Probably because New, Arrogant, Long Distance Me thinks: "Pah, 4 measley miles? Hardly worth pulling the trainers ...

Ahhh, People Aren't Sooooo Bad!

6 miles 'steady' tonight.  And I enjoyed it!  Because: 1) The colleague who took the mick yesterday with their Highland Fling comments obviously had their conscience pricking them, as they sheepishly apologised today: "I just didn't think you would be s...

Aaargh, weather! Aaargh, oth...

YUCK.  Has been the basic summary of my last 2 runs. Had a work dinner yesterday evening that I couldn't get out of. Told work in that case I would run in the morning and come in late, so ner.  But karma had the last laugh as woke to torrential rain. Hi...

(Lack Of) Time Is Of The Essence

Where has the week gone? So ridiculously busy it's just stupid. I need to start delegating- might buy a spare pair of legs to do some training for me. Wednesday was 6 miles slow. So I ran 6 miles slow. Pretty uneventful. Thursday night was 5 miles speed...

Wanted. One Set Of Nerves.

Massage booked in on Friday night. Tell physio the right calf is a bit jippy. He says "Does it feel like the muscle is locked up, deep in the mid-calf?" Yep, that's the fella.  He jabs my file triumphantly: "Problem with your right mid-calf, June 2008!"...
