The Ouch Potato

I am a runner. Just not right now. I've run the 2007 and 2010 London Marathons. More half marathons than I can immediately bring to mind. And more laps of the park than the Weimaraner living over the road.

But currently, I am parked on my sofa with both feet in bandages after my second bunion operation in 9 years. I can't run. I can only walk as far as the loo and then only with help of 2 crutches. So instead I shall live vicariously through you lot and the power of my imagination.

The Mind Isn't Willing, The B...

I'm not dead, I've just been sulking. Turns out my belligerent intent to plough straight on to the Kent Roadrunner Marathon back in June was at odds with the wishes of my body. After 2 weeks out following illness after VLM, I went straight back into a ...

Testing 1, 2, 3

After my belligerent high on signing up for the Kent Roadrunner came the inevitable low. Was I being totally idiotic? How much fitness had I haemorrhaged in the last couple of weeks? I still had a slight cough, so was I even going to fully recover in ti...

My Name Is Ruth And I Am A Ma...

Can't quite believe what I did today. Can't even blame a moment of madness. It was a carefully considered decision that I mulled over for a good 24 hours. I entered the Kent Roadrunner Marathon. On the 4th of June 2012. That's in about 5 weeks time. I ...

I Came, I Ran, I Decorated Th...

So unfortunately my fears about getting sick were realised. Started feeling unwell on Friday with a sore throat and had terrible night sweats on Friday and Saturday nights. Just what you need before you run 26.2 miles. Woke up on race morning to a wave ...

T-Minus 4 Days...

Currently oscillating wildly between massive excitement and sickening nerves. Oh, and also extreme paranoia about getting sick as Mr D has a feverish cold. I’m wishing I could go all Michael Jackson & live inside a hermetically sealed bubble (that’s...

Buns - 1. Ruth's Sanity - Nil.

Do not make your own hot cross buns. Just don't. Ignore everything Delia says about them being "so easy". They're not. I started making them at 1.30pm. Two provings later, they are only just in the oven at 4.10pm and I already never want to see another ...

Virtual Reality Running

Went back to physio for another massage on Monday, as the calves were feeling a bit jippy. I tell him about idiotically calculating my schedule a week short and the subsequent torture of an additional big mileage week. "Ah, good," he says "You get to do...

Burn, Baby, Burn

I am an idiot. Last week I was getting excited as I only had 4 weeks left on my training schedule. "Oh goody" I thought "only one hard week left to survive, then it's taper-tastic". Then I looked at the calendar. 5 weeks till race day. Hmm. Does not com...

Hell Is Other People

Been feeling very angry on my recent runs. Whole lot of agro going on. And it's them, not me. Saturday had 20 miles on the schedule, so off I trotted down to the river. Got some podcasts going on the iPod and settled in for the duration. All was fine un...

High mileage, creaking bodywo...

Me bad. Long time no blog. Not had time, too busy running, innit? Soooo. A quick recap of highlights from the last couple of weeks.  Went to The Cotswolds last weekend and was blessed with glorious Spring weather. Walked 7 miles Friday, 14 miles Saturda...

Kate Bush Is A Goddess. Fact.

15 miles on the schedule this morning. Now I have to admit I've been feeling very negative about the marathon this week. Dragging myself out night after night in the cold and dark to schlep round yet more thankless miles, with fundraising an extra worry...

Please Can I Be Cryrogenicall...

I'm typing this with the crook of my elbow. 3.5 mile recovery run tonight and by 1.4 all my fingers had caught frostbite and fallen off. I threw my head back against the artic gale and roared to the heavens: "By the power of GoreWindstopper, I command y...

We Are Family

I've finally launched my charity fundraising campaign. My initial begging missive elicited a flurry of return emails, the majority of which not, as I would have hoped, saying 'well done, good for you' etc etc but instead were along the lines of 'are you...

Night Fever

I had a horrible dream last night. I dreamt I was out for a walk and saw a man in a pink shirt just before I popped into my secret pee spot that I use when I'm doing my Thames path runs (I'm not telling you where it is or you'll all be using it). As I w...

Mo-Jo No-Go

So this is it. Marathon training 2012 has commenced. Err, except it hasn't. Lucky me has been on hols to Sri Lanka over Christmas & New Year, troughing out on curry and papaya. I absolutely adore curry, the hotter the better, but even I thought I'd ...

Gunnersbury Parkrun

I may have recently been a lazy blogger, but I haven’t been a lazy runner. I’ve been steadily building mileage and am finally feeling back to my old-ish, fit-ish self. And today was the inaugural Gunnersbury Parkrun. I registered to Parkrun yonks ago bu...

For some reason Pavlov's Dog ...

So here we are. The start of October. Where runners around the country shout "Hey, wait a minute Mr Postman!" waiting anxiously on that Marathon News magazine popping through the letter box. And finally, there it is. Landed butter-side down on the doorm...

The (Re)Start of a Beautiful ...

I’ve been remiss in my relationship recently.  I’ve been taking Garmin or leaving him. In the choice between waiting those 30 seconds for his ‘locating satellites’ or bounding straight off down the road for my stress-relieving post-work trot, bounding h...

Sleepless in Seattle

Literally. I've been in Seattle since Sunday for work and am suffering badly from jet-lag. I've been awake since 4.30am, hence finding myself with time to finally add a post. Everything has run away with me (no pun intended) recently & I apologise ...

Cue drums, harps, Gospel choi...

"Oh happy day!" Had another appointment with Sir Holiness Professor Super-Surgeon Who Shalt Be Obeyed yesterday afternoon.  After a jovial “Ah yes, The Runner” he starts squeezing and prodding and yanking my toe through impossible angles. I have the sud...

Backwards In Coming Forwards

Pfffeeeuurrgh. Is how I'm feeling. Positively bounced to physio's last night. He started with a quick toe flex and apparently we are now at 60 degrees, which made him very happy. Then onto the moment I had been waiting all day for - cue drum roll - the...

The End Is Nigh

I’m ridiculously excited.  On Friday evening at 7.00pm I SHALL BE RUNNING 5 K.  Oh yeah! I’ve started foot-rehab with my physio. First appointment was last Saturday for 30 mins of toe stretching and pulling and squeezing and twisting.  I knew they were ...

Wheels of Steel.

So back to the gym again yesterday. Arrived feeling very hungover. Departed feeling much better ("Good session today, well done!" Mr Chirpy Gym Owner shouted after me). Then got home and felt really hungover again. How does that work? Sod Alka-Seltzer, ...

Frock Me

Been to the gym twice this week. Get me! That's something I thought I'd never write. I'm on first name terms already with Mr Chirpy Gym Owner. He claims to be an ex-British track cyclist and name-drops "Chris" into conversation at opportune moments. So...
