Moomin's Marathon Blog

Welcome to my blog space! My name's Steve, I'm 29 and I'm about to embark on running the marathon. My brother, Paul and I came up with the wacky idea of running the Flora London Marathon whilst cheering on a friend who was running in the event last year. As we stood in the pouring rain on a wall in Canary Wharf shouting out words of encouragement to the passing runners we decided we wanted to get involved. In fact around that time we'd been thinking of doing something in memory of our mother, Nita, who died of Motor Neurone Disease in 1995. As a result, we decided to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) by running three of the UK's most popular races (Great South Run 2006, London Marathon 2007 and Great North Run 2007). We've successfully completed the Great South Run so now it's onto the Marathon....

An Incredible Experience

Wow, what an incredible experience? The day started well despite having to force-feed spoonfuls of porridge down my throat at 7:30am!! I arrived in good time to Greenwich Park and was instantly impressed with the whole organisation. By the time I’d got ...

Good Luck!!

This will be my last post before I join all of you, my fellow bloggers, in running the best marathon in the world. I'm prepared but am I ready? All my kit and running accessories have been organised and laid out ready for tomorrow but I keep feel...

Pen Upgrade!

I read Bupa's blog entry yesterday and was interested nee excited to note that he was able to secure a marathon pen (not of the "Bic" variety!) upgrade from pen 8 to pen 5!! I was anxious to do the same thing and decided to go back to Custom Hous...

The Final Countdown - 2 Days ...

I had my last sports massage at lunchtime today. It was quite relaxing actually and not too painful!! The sports masseur also said that my right calf felt much better which was also encouraging. Since I missed a training session yeste...

Marathon Expo

Given that I work in the City I decided to make use of the proximity to Custom House and get to the expo before the big crowds got there. It didn't start well when I boarded the DLR without paying attention to the destination and ended up in Carnary Wha...

Just Ticking Over...

I haven't done any exercise since Friday so I was quite glad to get down the gym for a light workout. My aim was to do just enough to keep the old muscles ticking over. I went on the bike and did 11km over an undulating profile for 24 minutes (as...

Hot In The City

It's very hot here in London. I'm hoping that this dry weather continues but that the temperatures are not like this next Sunday. Dehydration would be a big problem for us runners and would make a very hard challenge much harder!! As for today, well the...

Sweaty Betty

It feels like summer doesn't it? The sun is shining, the winter coat has taken its place at the back of the cupboard, the central heating has been set to "off" and people seem much happier. The only bad thing at the moment is that I'm not in a position ...

I'm A Freak!!!!

I had a sports massage yesterday and the masseur noted some odd things: one there's less muscle bulk in my right calf than in my left; two whenever I bend on one leg, my knee points inward suggesting I've got used to not using my glutes and three that t...

Rest & Relaxation

Yep you guessed it - I decided to give in and utilise the long Easter weekend for some rest and relaxation. Although you can't say that cleaning out the minging kitchen sink waste pipes (and there are a lot of them) is resting or relaxing. Howeve...

Easter Sunday

Well I was hoping to utilise this long and very sunny weekend for a much needed (and final) long run but alas any running would, I feel, exaggerate my injury. So I have to bite the bullet and accept that the only exercise I can do is a planned 7 mile wa...

Spin, Spin, Sugar

I've now got to the stage when I head down to the gym and gaze lovingly at the treadmill desperate to jump on it and do a cheeky 10K but knowing that it isn't going happen without making things worse. So, I turn round, drag myself onto a bike and push ...

Pedal Power

Forget the running. I'm going to train for the Tour de France!!! Not really but that's how it feels at the moment. The only cardio activity I can do without adversely affecting my calf is pedal pushing. I had two sessions of physio on Monday and a spor...

Will I Last The Distance?

After more than a week of frustration at not being properly fit to run any distance it was with some apprehension that I took to the road today. I decided to do a much longer warm-up including light jogging and fast-walking followed by some stretching....

Bruised And Battered

For some reason I decided not to go to the gym today - I think I was working on the premise that I would go tomorrow. But as I left work it suddenly occurred to me that that was a silly plan for two reasons: one my legs would be aching after toda...

Worrying Times

As is the norm at the moment, I (reluctantly) jumped on the bike at the gym. I decided to do the 24 minute randomly hilly program on the bike and set the level to 6. I decided to push myself quite hard as I just feel I'm getting nowhere at the moment. S...

I'm Spinning Around!

I'm back at work today after my long weekend away in the cold north!! I decided to head down to the gym today rather than risk my calf at running club. I jumped on the treadmill and eased myself into a steady pace with the intention of doing a 5 ...

My First Wedding Anniversary!

Today is the first anniversary of when I got married to my beautiful wife, Helen. Gosh how time flies? It doesn't seem like a year since we said "I do" to each other. Anyway to celebrate both Helen and I headed down to the gym (forgetting that th...

Still Unable To Run (But I Ca...

I've done no training since my run on Tuesday because of the pain in my right calf. So with several days rest behind me I jumped at the chance of getting back on the treadmill. However no sooner had I got on the 'mill and increased the speed to 10km/h ...

All The Eights

Well, I've had two days rest since Sunday's long run and my I needed it. I was actually a little hesitant about going along to running club this evening as my right calf was acting up as usual. However, my stubbornness won the day and I was determined t...

Thames Towpath 20

Ooh I'm feeling very sore. Yay!! I completed the planned 20 miles along the Thames Towpath in a time of 2:43:08 in blistering sunshine and, as it happen, in blistering blusters of wind particularly at the Richmond end of the run!! To...

Groundhog Day

At the moment it kind of feels a little like Groundhog Day (great film by the way) at the gym at the moment. I think I need to depart from my current routine as I'm getting a little bored. I think I need to spice things up - do more cross-training, fart...

A Steady 5 Miler

Nothing much to report today other than completing 5 miles on the treadie. I had actually intended to do another 10K run but thought better of it when I felt a pain in that ligament in my right knee and remembered that I am running 20 miles on Sunday!! ...
