The road to Hamburg 2012

This is a blog about my training for the Hamburg marathon on April 29th 2012. I ran the London Marathon for Children with Leukaemia last year. It was a great experience but much harder than I thought it would be. The day was very hot and I hit the wall at 20 miles and I ran / walked the last 6 and finished in 5 hours 10. I had tried to run at 10 mins / mile pace but I think this was too fast for the training I had done and that I'd only started running properly in the summer before (before that I could only run about 2 miles). I had completed a marathon before way back about 1985.

I entered the ballot for the VLM this year but didn't get in, so decided to run the Hamburg marathon as I wanted to give the distance another go and I have well and truly got back into running again. This time I hope to get round in under 4 1/2 hours. Hopefully I can as I ran the Peterborough half in 1hr 57 in October and will have had a full year of training this time.

Hamburg Marathon 2012 race re...

I ran in the Hamburg Marathon yesterday. This was a really great well organised event. I wanted to have another go at a marathon after last year's Virgin London Marathon. I didn't get into the ballot for this year's VLM, so decided to look for another e...

1 week to go / Cambridge 10 m...

Only 1 week to go to the Hamburg Marathon and I think I am pretty well prepared for it and the training has gone well. I'm hopeful I can get under 4 1/2 hours and even beat my PB of 4:23 for the marathon. Did 10 miles this morning, which is my last majo...

2 weeks to go

Only 2 weeks to go to the Hamburg marathon now. I've not run as much as I would have liked this week. I went to the Sweatshop Running Community again on Wednesday. It was a pyramid session of 1 min, 2 and 3 minutes out and then back. I was planning to r...

Last 20 miles

I did my last 20 mile run before the marathon in the wind and rain yesterday. A bit slower then last Sunday's Oakley 20, but still managed to run all the way. Pleased with the run considering the conditions and how tough the Oakley 20 was. Had a 10 minu...

Oakley 20

Ran in the Oakley 20 today. It had been a bit touch and go whether I would run this. I haven't been feeling very well this week. I was due to run on Tuesday, but didn't feel up to it, as I felt terrible at work on Monday. Did a slow 5K on Wednesday and ...

Stowmarket 1/2 marathon

We ran in this event yesterday. We didn't have places reserved as we were due to run the Great Bentley 1/2 which ended up being last week instead of this week, as I covered in my last post. We turned up early to make sure we could get in and we got plac...

Tired

I've felt tired again this week and my legs have felt heavy at times, but I'm sticking to my training plan, as I think this is only to be expected, if I'm going to get round the marathon better than I did last time. Tuesday I did 16 x 200M repeats, a ha...

Hard 18 miler

Ran 18 miles yesterday, it was really hard. I think maybe last weeks fast 17 1/2 miles had taken its toll. Did 18 miles in 3:09 yesterday as compared to 17 1/2 miles in 2:42 last week. I started the run yesterday later than I normally do these days at 4...

Repeats

Really enjoyed running 12 x 400m repeats today. Really feels satisfying to complete and its really helping my fitness. Off to Bournemouth tomorrow for work and hopefully I'll be able to do some running along the sea front. May be dark when I get there, ...

Great weekend of running

Really good weekend of running. On Saturday I went to Cambridge Parkrun and did a new PB of 22:20. Today it was a 17 1/2 mile run. Started off at 8:30 AM in the fog and then when I got towards the centre of Cambridge the sun came out and it started to w...

Run in the sun

Much better run yesterday than Tuesday, felt much more motivated. Ran 4 1/2 miles in 38 minutes. Running in the sun when it's warmer is much better than when it's overcast and dull. I can't wait for Spring to be here properly. Visit to the physio to rel...

Motivation !

5 1/2 miles with 3 1/2 miles at 8:30 pace. Found it quite difficult to feel motivated today. Felt really cold out running today, especially as it has been warming up a bit over the last few weeks.

Stretch, stretch and stretch ...

My knee had felt very tight on the run on Thursday, so I made sure I did plenty on stretching after that run. Set off on Saturday for a 15 mile run. Felt much better from the start of the run then I did on Thursday. Stopped for a couple of stretches on ...

Disappointing run

My training plan had a 9 mile run down today. When I got out of the door, I knew it wasn't going to be a great run. My left knee wasn't that great and  I didn't feel that great. I think my sugar levels were low even though I thought I'd eaten ok during ...

Running tired

My training plan today has 1 mile jog, 4 miles at 8:30 with 400M or 3 mins recovery followed by 1 mile jog. Started off on the 1 mile jog and I felt tired. I was running 10:15 pace and I didn't know if would be able to increase the pace. So then increas...

Busy weekend

A bit of a busy weekend ! Saturday morning went for a run with Paul, who I trained with last year, when we did the VLM. Paul is fitter than me (although I am catching up), so it was a fast run. We ran to Milton Country Park, where Cambridge Parkrun is h...

9 weeks to go

9 weeks to go to the Hamburg Marathon. The training plan is getting more demanding but it's going well. Ran 5 1/2 miles at an average pace of 9:25 mins / mile this morning, but did feel quite tired running it after Tuesday's rep session. Part of the pla...

Yorkshire training camp

I haven't blogged for a bit. We were in Yorkshire last week for the half term holiday. Thursday 9th Feb was spent getting ready to go to Yorkshire. Managed to get a good run of 8 1/2 miles in that day. On the Friday we travelled to Yorkshire where there...

Got my Garmin

Hurray I've got my Garmin back all repaired. Very quick turn around. On holiday next week and will be doing some new routes so really wanted it for then. Only managed 2 miles around the village tonight, as I didn't want to be out too long. Most of the s...

1/2 Marathon cancelled

I was due to run in the Great Bentley 1/2 yesterday, but it was cancelled due to the snow. Was looking forward to running it. Wasn't looking forward to the drive there in the snow, though. I hope the snow clears quickly, as I haven't run since Thursday ...

No Garmin !

Have been in contact about my broken Forerunner 110. As its out of warranty it will need to go back to them for repair. Its going to cost £57 to replace / repair,  but it's cheaper than a new one. I'm lost without it ! 6 miles home from dropping the kid...

Broken Garmin

Nightmare, the menu button on my Garmin has stopped working, so I couldn't use it today. I'm so used to using it now, it's really strange to run without it. It's out of warranty, being bought at Christmas 2010, hopefully I can get it fixed soon. Ran 5 m...

Run to Cambridge parkrun 2nd ...

Got up early yesterday and ran 7 miles to Parkrun. Bit mad, but not as mad as this : http://normdriskell.blogspot.com/2012/01/ahh-so-this-is-what-training-is-for.html It was Cambridge parkrun's (http://www.parkrun.org.uk/cambridge/home) 2nd birthday and...

5 Miles and physio

Ran the long way home 5 miles after dropping the kids at school this morning. My usual route round the village recreation ground and then the Stripey path. Took it fairly easy. Nice day for running no rain or wind. Some days when I go back over the rail...
