Back to winter training

Well I'm not sure about all these predicted heat waves for the weekend but last nights session took me right back to a proper old winter's evening. Wet, windy and bloody cold only one thing for it a good old hills session. Being so spoilt for hills it wasn't to difficult to find that offered some protetion from the rain. A mile warm in the loose sense, 10 reps on the hill, before a mile home which felt surprisingly good it even felt as if I had a bit of spring in the legs, not had that feeling for a long time. Then home to one of those withering looks only a wife can give as I tempted to walk in the kitchen in such a state. Had that very satisfying achey feeling in the legs and the satisfaction of getting a good session under the belt when it was so so tempting not to run.

We got away last week for a few days camping down at Harlyn which is on the north Cornwall coast just down from Padstow with 6 other families. Once again the wind and cold did play havoc with plans. But i did manage to get out out for a lovely run on part of the South West coast path on the Wednesday evening. Got for about an hour Garmin free and probably ran about 6 miles, highlight had to be seeing a seal in Harlyn Bay bobing about the sea was so clear you could even make it out when it was under the water. Managed to get in the sea myself later in the week for a spot of body boarding with my son great fun despite the cold. Great to warm up with a game of beach rounders before a bbq and a few galsses of Henry Westons cloudy cider which certainly helped in getting some zzzzzz's in.

Inspired by the mid week run I decided to hit the South West coast path closer to home for Saturdays longer run. Left home with a rough plan up throught the near by woods before hitting the lanes some early undulations before a long steady climb up to Staaddiscombe village. Then instead of staying on the coast road I headed for a lane that was familiar from my youth. The lane soon change to a farm track before turning into a bridleway very unsteady running but going down hill all the time. The path eventually broght me out to the beach at Bovisands. Unfortunately what goes down has to go up.A pretty steep climb follows that involves more than a few steps which of course had to be walked. This brought me out to the highest point of the run and a spectular view across Plymouth Sound to Cornwall. Another long down hill section that took be back to down to sea level at Mount Batten, which was a former RAF base, it was home to the sea planes during the second world war, but has now been turned into water sports centre. It was now time to head for home, it was time to leave the sea and follow the river Plym. I then picked up the old railway track which took me ever closer to home and the final climb its not particularly steep and has got flat bits in it but i always find it a tough finish and it didn't disappoint.  So a little over 11 miles done at 8.50 pace and just over 1100 feet of climbing but thats only the stats and as you deadicated trail runners understand that these will only give you part of the story to get the full story you've got to run it for yourselves.

Right I'm off to find the sun cream and sholud the heat wave turn up as always go careful out there
