Trevor's first marathon

No clever title for this blog.  Just an attempt to record how my trainings going.  My first ever marathon after 5 years of trying to get in by the ballot.  Feel daunted by the prospect now but what a challenge!

It's only a theory

Two sessions of hard running so far this week.  Still felt a bit heavy legged after Saturday but 5.25 miles at (nearly) 10k pace.  44 minutes. Then today ran home from work, 7.8 miles.  Did 15 minute hard runing with 2.5 minute recoveries in between.  1...

The legs stand up to the long...

20.5 miles today.  The good news: Both legs came through unscathed.  Feel as confident as I can now that they can last out the full distance.  I have had to sacrifice some mileage to nurse them through but I think it has been worth it. Little bit furthe...

As diagnosed; a case of pre r...

Tonight, 5 miles in just under 45 minutes.  It was steady but probably a bit slower than I thought I had done as I felt I was pushing a bit, certainly running at faster than race pace and yet it was only 9 minute miles.  Still it was the third run at pa...

The reality hits home

The London marathon magazine has arrived.  It has all the instructions about race day and advice for spectators etc.  It really hit me that the whole thing is real now.  And it also makes me realise how many things there are to think about and plan for....

Fartlek? What's that all about?

I've never quite got Fartleks.  Thr training plan was for a 50 minute one today.  It seems to me that a Fartlek is unstructured interval training and it is the unstructured bit that I find difficult.  If I have understood it right you run in bursts when...

Is my training plan stretchin...

Yet another 45 minutes steady run.  Nothing much to report really.  Could still feel muscle strain a bit but resting yesterday helped and I am not worried about any long term problems. At times I do worry that the training plan I am following doesn't se...

Good news/bad news

A real case of good news and bad news today. Good news; broke 20 miles for the first time, by 0.33 mile according to Map Your Passion.  Approx 2hours 55minutes.  Would be perfect training distance and time in prep for London.  Still feeling uncomfortabl...

Getting the experiments right

Steady 45 minutes.  What a change in the temperature.  Used the old shoes again.  At the time I didn't think they were having the same impact as yesterday but at the end I felt good about them again.  Have been wearing the ankle support as well and this...

Intervals today

Another of those heavy legged days. 2 x 15 minutes flat out.  Not sure they are going to improve my speed.  Don't like doing them but they certainly help in that last mile when I want to put in that last bit of effort.  By doing these the mind and body ...

The mind was willing but ...

After Sunday's efforts I was still buzzing yesterday and wanted to go out for a nice easy loosener but every time I started up every muscle in my legs just said "No" and complained loudly at the very thought.  They were right of course and a rest day wa...

Now I know I can do it

I am sitting here feeling really pleased with myself and really pumped up following the Kilomathon.  Anyone who has read my previous posts will know that I wasn't feeling very confident because of the impact on my training of tendonitis.  Had originally...

What a difference a day makes

Yesterday it felt like I had never run as far as the end of the road in my life and every muscle in my body had siezed up and then today I bounded around the country park for 45 minutes at a bit above what I hope will be Sunday's race pace feeling great...

Mid week catch up

2 runs since Sunday.  Got home in time on Monday to do 45 minutes round the Country Park in the late evening sun.  Amazing scarlett sky as sun set.  Then tonight tried a "fartleck" home, approx 7 miles, maybe a bit more. 70 mins.  One of those days wher...

First event of the Year

The sun came out to make it a lovely day for my first organised run of the year.  Bit chilly waiting for the start and once cooled down at the finish but can't complain at the blue skies.  First time this year I've run in shorts and t-shirt rather than ...

A Question of Pace

Ran home from work.  8 mile; 1 hour 10min.  It was lovely to run in the sushine for a change and to be able to run along the canal.  Getting lighter and dryer.  Great. Training plan suggested running at "race pace".  I really went for it running hard to...

Bring Me Sunshine

4.75 miles again but nice and easy, 45 minutes.  Went round the village a couple of times.  Not the most exciting route, although it does have a couple of hills which is useful.  I noticed that it was still light when I got home altough quickly went dar...

That's Better

Ran some intervals, 3 x 10 minutes hard with a couple of minutes recoveries.  Felt better than I have for quite a while.  Loose and relaxed. Looked at some details about the Kilomathon today.  9 am start is pretty early and the starting "pens" close at ...

False Start

Not a good start. I haven't been keeping this up to date. Must do better. Bit of a strange time in my training. I was going really well in January, already running19 miles and feeling good and confident. Might even hav been on track for going under 4 ho...
