The Road to Ambition

A blog of my journey from gym enthusiast to marathon runner.

Like a lot of people, I watch the London Marathon every year, thinking 'one day that will be me'. It's a childhood ambition.

I have entered the ballot for 2011 and 2012 and been rejected both times. I don't have time don't want to make time for additional fundraising for a charity place, so will take my chances with the ballot for as long as it takes to secure a place.

However in the meantime I have signed up for MK Marathon on 29/4/12 - the week after London. Let the marathon training commence.

I started running in May 2010, completed 2 5ks and an 8k that season, had a four month winter break, then signed up for a half marathon which I completed in Oct 2011.

Thanks for reading,

week two

Ooh 10 days with no updates! My last post ended on a downer with cutting my run very short. However, things are now going great, I've run a lot of miles since then. I recovered in time for my mid-week club run of 6 miles, although I struggled, we all di...

Healthy living for a healthy ...

I realise this blog is situated in the marathon training section but there's other indirect targets to my marathon training as well. Although I hope they last, not just for marathon training, not just for 2012, but for life. Basically I want to eat heal...

new year, new hopes, new plans.

I've been very quiet on the blogging which reflects my running really. As predicted I felt quite tired in the evenings in the early part of Nov having started work so was pretty much doing a club run and maybe one other at the weekend but my weekly mile...

6 months to go

Not much to report as I'm having a week off exercise wise. It's not ideal even if I count it as my easy week (which should have been next week) and it's unlikely I'll manage a hard week next week as I start a new job and reckon it'll take a week or two ...

week three and lucozade dilemas

Last week was lots of cross training and little running, this week was very little cross training but lots of running, 24 miles to be precise which is my highest ever. That of course includes the fact I delayed my Sunday LSR of 8m til Tuesday, as well d...

week two including weird drea...

A light week running wise with just over 9 miles covered compared to week 1 which was 10. The reason being I took Sunday and Monday as complete rest days as I felt rough which was a shame as my legs were raring to go on Sunday, but I felt fantastic duri...

week one done

I have been pretty pleased with my post half marathon progress. I managed a gym session on the following day plus 3 runs during the week which isn't bad considering it had to be fitted in around a job interview and all the prep that required. Mind you I...

Resurrecting my blog now I ha...

Well I thought I would dig this out again as I have reached a significant point in my running career. I initially set this up when I entered the ballot for VLM on my first attempt. I have now got two rejections behind me, having received the commiserati...

Another scenic detour

Sunday Well I was aiming for a 3 miler yesterday to practice the distance as I'm hoping to do a parkrun 5k next week. However, I decided on a new route and missed turn so ended up doing 3 3/4 miles instead. I really enjoyed the run though - I love the l...

Finally injury free, hoorah!

Weds I've had a fairly quiet week exercise wise, but have been bounding with enthusiasm for today's run. My foot was noticeably better yesterday so decided to try a LSR today and there's not one twinge despite nearly 4 miles of rough ground - a loop alo...

injury diagnosis

Friday I've managed two runs this week, but now officially on Doctors orders to rest. The rough ground from Weds really hurt my feet (even the non injured one to an extent) and exacerbated my injury. I went to the Dr on Thu and I have just a soft issue ...

Mile PB

Monday Well my weekend wasn't as active as I had planned, but I have a new PB as a consolation. I was shattered on Saturday so didn't even leave the house, but made the effort on Sunday to run a fast mile. I managed it in 9m 25s which is a whole 38s qui...

Rest over, plans to get back ...

Saturday Well the recovery took a little longer / was a little harder than I expected for Weds distance, but people do say racing takes much more out of you than training, I guess I just underestimated that. Anyway, I promised myself a few days off and ...

5k race well under target tim...

Thursday I'm still glowing this morning, from last nights 'race'. I use the term loosely as I had two targets in mind - set a respectable sub 35m PB, and not finish last (I had correctly assumed this small, not very well advertised race series would be ...

My Longest Swim Ever

Tuesday So the title gives away the fact that of the three options mentioned yesterday, for todays exercise, I opted for a different one. Swimming wasn't on my shortlist, however I decided it's the best way to test my lungs without bearing weight on my ...

taking it easy - 2 days til r...

Monday Official rest day today. I'll have to see how my foot feels tomorrow before I decide what my last pre-race training session entails. Current options (increasing in difficulty given injury) are 1) cycle for 35 mins to test my endurance over the ti...

1st lb lost

Sunday This is going to be a brief one as I haven't actually exercised since my last blog posting. I was really tired and busy on Friday, so gave it a miss. I think I need to designate it a definitive rest day to stop me feeling guilty, it's just if hub...

Happy one month running anniv...

Friday I've been a runner for exactly one month today! Yesterday, I managed a really focused swim which resulted in 64 lengths (1 mile) in 66 mins. My previous three attempts in the pool have been thwarted by me stopping to chat far too much (getting to...

triple whammy exercise day

Well so much for probably scrapping the cross training this week in favour of race prep. I managed a run, bike ride, and weights session in the gym today. I did my planned 1 1/4 mile run this morning so got a good 13 min block of straight running - my l...

'real buzz' is absolutely the...

Tuesday I'm so chuffed I'm still buzzing from a fantastic run early this afternoon. The planned 2 1/2 mile run turned in a 3 miler courtesy of missing a turn and not realising til I got to the by-pass! (Also very chuffed when I mapped it retrospectively...

Targets for this week and a n...

Monday Rest day today, as Monday has traditionally become. After running both Sat and Sun, I suppose it's no bad thing, but I don't feel I need a rest, having not done an LSR. Truth be known I'm a bit jealous that hubby is running today, but I can't bec...

Well this weekend didn't quit...

...but I managed to squeeze in an extra run, so it's all good. After deciding that Saturday was too busy a schedule and we would only get around an hour at the Race For Life, we scrapped the idea in favour of going on Sunday. It also occured to me that ...

Watching other people run

Busy day planned today which rules out any chance of a run. Mind you my aches from the hill trail run/walking haven't completely disappeared so it's no loss. However, I am going to watch other people run which will be exciting, as I've never supported a...
Friday OK, so obviously at this stage of the training I didn't run a half marathon, but yesterday I run/walked a very hilly wooded trail of 8.5 miles, shortly followed by about 5 miles of walking. Firstly, I must mention Wednesday's exercise. Excited by...
