Club Foot Runner

I was born with club feet. My right foot was on backwards, and my left foot pointing sideways. I had two operations when I was one, two when I was four, one when I was seven and a whole heap of physiotherapy. As a result no one can tell at a casual glance that I am any different, though I have to buy two pairs of shoes as my left foot is two sizes bigger than my right. My right calf is also about half the size of my left, though my gait is mainly normal.

I have been running on and off for most of my adult life, and on seeing Eddie Izzard's amazing multi-marathon achievement in 2009, decided it was time to go for the big one. I ran London Marathon in 2011, though really struggled with the heat and cramp and got round in 5h46.

I love running, and my goal for now is to get a sub-four hour marathon. I still have some way to go...

Abingdon marathon

Since my last post I've run Oxford half marathon, 2:19:17, and Abingdon marathon, 5:25. I was really disappointed with the Oxford time, as I was hoping for 2:10, but was just shattered after doing 20 miles the weekend before. Conversely I was really ple...

19.4 mile training run whoop ...

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/115255290 Last training run before Abingdon marathon and I managed to run 19.4 miles without walking. So chuffed. Furthest I managed before London was 18.5, and London itself was a bit of a disaster. It's incredibly im...

Bristol Half

Long break again, but I've been keeping up my training. Have been really struggling to complete the long runs though. I've run 14-15 miles every weekend for the last 6 weeks, but don't seem to be able to push through that distance. Next weekend is my la...

16 miles is my Achilles heel

if you don't include 26 obviously... Last time I did this distance in February the weather was appalling and I got cramp. It was really hard. This time I forgot my waterbottle and had to go back, up a hill. Even though I shaved a bit off the end I did 1...

Training hard again

Hello! It's been a while since I posted, and my training's been a bit hit and miss, though I've mainly kept my fitness up. I've now started my training ramp for Abingdon Marathon in October, and am aiming to get to 40 miles a week, and have a few 20+ mi...

Recap

Well, London was amazing! Unfortunately I got cramp after 10 miles, totally unexpectedly, and had to hobble/walk/jog round the last 16 miles. It took 5:46 instead of the 4:20 I was hoping for. However the crowd, organisation and other competitors were a...

Week to go

Nervous Excited No concentration Aaarrrgghhhh Had some good training runs last week, and a lovely 8.5 mile on Sunday. Feeling good, light and fit. Right calf slighlty tight so will watch that this week, lots of stretching and feet up. See you all there!

Taper madness

Recovered really fast from the 20 mile, and had a good couple of short runs last week. Then arranged to run with a friend from my running club on the Sat  for 12 miles. Set out too fast and started really suffering at 9 miles, and had to walk lots. Stil...

20 miles!

Did 20 miles yesterday: http://www.walkjogrun.net/routes/current_route.cfm?rid=EC9A2F9B-B997-4231-EABCEFD038048F16. Would have uploaded my garmin route but their upload seems to be broken for me at the moment. Was glorious for the first 18 miles and the...

3 weeks to go

I think the funk I was in last week was a mix of exhaustion and the fact that I was on the verge of man flu. Training got hammered last week, then managed to get out on Thursday for a nice fast 5 miles which made me feel better. 20 miles tomorrow, reall...

Down in the dumps

Been having a bit of a rough week. Ever since my long run on Sunday I've been feeling blue, not too sure why. It was my step-dad's birthday yesterday - he passed away in September, which is probably part of it. I managed a quick (for me) 5 miles last ni...

18 miles for the win

Just cracked 18 miles for the first time. Here is the Garmin track for those who are interested: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/72786211 Love going to places for the first time by running. Need steak now, bye bye.

Pome from my sister

O brother dear, you are about to run Your very brilliant first marathon. And so I thought I’d put pen to paper And send some thoughts now, before you taper.   The first two miles can be such a long grind, 'Specially in London, so don’t you mind. Going s...

Hello!

Hello! This is my first ever blog post, so greetings to you all. Today is a good day. I've had to buy two pairs of shoes my entire life, but after an email explaining the situation, New Balance have sent me some new shoes. I'm not sure I'm ever going to...
