What should I eat and drink on a long cycle ride?

What you eat and drink on a ride very much depends on how far you are travelling. Before you start your ride you should have consumed a carbohydrate-rich meal to set you up for your ride.

If you are planning on riding for more than an hour then you need to take along some food and drink. Most road bike will have facility to add carriages for two drinks bottles and you can fill these with water with one or two hydration tablets which contain useful electrolytes. Some energy gels and bars are convenient way of getting the additional fuel you may need, but if you don’t have these, then a banana is a very good option.

I've been told that I could benefit from having a bike fit? Is it really worth it or just a waste of money?

I'm more than a bit self-conscious. Do I really have to wear the lycra gear typically worn by most road cyclists?
