How can I keep my calves loose after running?
Your calf muscles are often the muscle group that takes a real hammering when running fast on the track, for example, running up hill and from hard races on concrete. It’s quite a fragile muscle really and can lead to problems in other areas, especially in the achilles.
Stretching before and after each run will prepare the muscle and aid recovery, as can wearing recovery tights and taking ice baths where possible.
The exercise that probably helps the most, even though it can often seem like it’s too easy to be doing much benefit, is calf raises and lowers.
