Zum Zum Zumba

After careful consideration and much soul-searching, I have decided to take the plunge and have a go at fitness-dancing. Yes the best efforts of Hollins and his motley Strictly crew, have inspired me to try a little soft shoe shuffle. To be honest I can’t take any credit for this decision. A mate of mine who is a member at the same health club as me, spotted an advert and asked me to go with her. It was that simple. So minimum effort involved all round, which is right up my street I can tell you.

However the class sounds anything but. We are going to try Zumba and when I first looked at the name, I thought it sounded like some kind of unpleasant tummy bug you might get while on holiday in Venezuela. But I’m assured it is a kind of latin-inspired dance fitness workout, which will leave me with calves of steel and a tiny bottom......if only. This is how the official Zumba website describes the workout.....

“The Zumba programme fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms with easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness programme that will blow you away. Our goal is simple: We want you to want to work out, to love working out, to get hooked.”

Well that is a bold statement. We want you to love working out.... is that actually possible?????? Perhaps for some hardy souls. I just wouldn’t consider myself one of them. I love the feeling of having worked out, that endorphin rush, which is a word that looks so much like dolphin isn’t it? But do I actually enjoy working out? Err no. In fact as I sit here now typing away, I know that later I have one of the few weekly windows of opportunity to go to the gym. It feels like the Sword of Damocles hanging over my head. I will of course go and make myself do a run and some stepping. But enjoy it. Hmmmmm, no.

However think of me tomorrow evening. Hopefully there won't be an audience, like there is in the video clip. But I will of course report back pluckily dear friends, with tales of daring-do and high jinx. And I might even enjoy it. Heaven forbid. In the meantime, if I have inspired any of you as much as I inspire myself (that was a joke I hasten to add), I have popped some useful links on the page, to get you started if you fancy Zumba too. Enjoy fitness funsters!
