Update on the training...coming along slowly!
Well I've been trying to follow the training plan, but it's not easy with work and other commitments. So far, the swim is suffering the most. Today makes 2 weeks since I've been in the pool so that's not going to get the job done. On the upside, I've been doing all the biking by fitting in spin classes or cycling classes at the gym. And I'm doing almost all of the strength training/core workouts, even if I do have to fit some of them in at the gym rather than with the group. I hate to miss Wednesdays coz that's when we do "riverdance" and jump around in squares and over foam blocks to improve our coordination, activate stabilization muscles, and generally sound like a herd of elephants stampeding at a gym. It leads to lots of laughter which has to increase the HR - sort of endurance training, right?
Running is still tabled until the right achilles gets a proper rest. It's been 3 weeks since the diagnosis of tendonitis, and I ran for 30 minutes last Tuesday, only to have it flare up again briefly on Thursday. The good news is that with the massage and stretching and foam roller, I got it under control and it felt much better Friday. So I'm either walking or using the elliptical at the gym to keep moving. Yesterday I had a bike ride for 3 hours and it went well. Only difficulty is keeping my cadence high and my HR low and keeping up with my group - it makes me too slow and I get dropped! But I need the endurance base so I have to suck up my pride and get on with it.
Heading up to Clermont this weekend - just outside Orlando - where there are actual hills, not just a big bridge to ride! I'm hoping that I will get a good 3 hours of riding and some confidence from the hills, but I think it may be too early for that. We'll see.
And it's time I crawled back into the wetsuit/neoprene coffin and go for an open water swim - I really need to get the panic under control.
