I'd like to try using Powerade during my training in case I feel I need it on the day. I don't want to train carrying a bottle though. How do you recreate race day when you wouldn't normally drink during training?

It is really important to train with the specific energy product used in the event as they are all slightly different and can affect your stomach if you're not used to them. There are two ways of doing this.

One is to use a 'running belt' which has a slot for a bottle. It takes a while to get used to these belts but using one means you avoid carrying a bottle in your hands (an issue that can lead to bad posture).

The second way is to hide some bottles of energy drink at certain points along your running route. By doing this you are not carrying anything and you arrive and depart a 'water station' as you will at the event (albeit in a slightly different style).
