What are the best shoes to wear for a muddy run?

Traction is vital so take a good look at the sole or your shoes. Consider whether you’re confident that they will stop you slipping and sliding about.

Lightweight hiking trainers may be your best bet. They are specially designed for tackling hills and mountains and therefore they have a superior grip. This will really come in handy when you are scrambling up a huge wooden wall or trying to get out of a pool of water.

It’s also important to make sure you get a durable pair, as they are really going to be put through their paces. Having shoes that are flexible is another key consideration. You’re going to be scrambling over many obstacles, so hard hiking boots will be a hindrance. Think sturdy trainers instead. And remember it’s never a good idea to wear new shoes for an event like this.

If you are buying shoes for your run, make sure you break them in for a few weeks before. The best way is to do your training in the shoes you plan to wear for the race, this way you’ll know they will be comfy on the day.

A good tip is to use a roll of tape to ensure your shoes are secured to your feet. While it might feel like they fit well when you’re jogging on grass, or even a muddy trail, you’ll be surprised how easy it is to lose a shoe in the sludge halfway through the run.

I'm doing a Tough Mudder and the website says that you don't need to do loads of training beforehand, but it seems like a big challenge. How much preparation is really needed?
