Progress - slow and steady

Mar3020102:29 p.m.

Definitely slow and steady in terms of fundraising - the total (see www.justgiving.com/Andrew-Lambe) is inching up, but I have today emailed a dozen or so local businesses so hopefully that will result in some support or gifts to raffle etc - I'll also be writing to all those that I don't have email addresses for so watch this space for details of the kind and generous who support my campaign!!

Training is also slow and steady, another long run at the weekend - again 20 miles [and despite the nice weather yes on the running machine again]. A bit disappointed as I did want to try and go a fraction further but perhaps next time on my last long distance run before my taper... Also did a comfortable 10km before work this morning...

I've been asked how I can run for sooo long on the treadmill, don't I get bored, so here's a few of my tips for treadmill running...

  • use the functionality of the machine to make it more interesting - use the speed and the incline etc - also use the time to help focus; for example only put on 5 mins and when you get to 4 minute 40 increase the time to 10 minutes and when you get to 9 mins 40 increase to 15 mins etc...
  • watch other people, see for example how they run, their gait / footfalls etc, are they efficient runners, analyse your running, how does it feel, can you copy them etc...
  • keep mentally active - can you find a noun starting with each letter of the alphabet - challenge yourself by making it of at least four letters...
  • if you are running in the gym with a television news channel with the scrolling headlines, count the letters, or assign each letter a value corresponding to its place in the alphabet, add up the values of the first letter of each word in the headlines and see which headline has the highest value - given they are scrolling you generally get many opportunities to count and it helps with posture etc... or
  • just enjoy the view, the occasion chatter with the people passing or on the neighbouring machines and appreciate the comfort, the air conditioning the lack of rain, wind, sun or snow!

I know, all very eccentric (to put it politely) but it all keeps me going....

Hope all's well with everyone's training and fundraising as we enter the final weeks / days...

  • Suziewee 'No you've not tempted me onto the treadmill!! But well done that is a sterling effort. Good luck with the rest of the fundraising. I have been really lucky with some really supportive friends. I held a coffee morning which raised over £200 and our branch's BF counsellor held a banquet for me. She cooked a three course meal and charged people £20 per head and it raised nearly £400! I hope you get some support from local businesses, I tried that but drew a blank.' added 30th Mar 2010
