Time Flies!

Wow it has been 5 months since I first was on this site...and I had never been back...well I started my official training for Big Sur today....Tooka brisk walk with my dogs for 2 miles and then did 45 minute cardio workout with some weights and another 2.5 mile walk tonight....I know doesnt sound like much...but I will build up!
I did complete my Long Beach Marathon and had a better time by 11 minutes from last year. Pretty happy about that because I was unable to really train at all...my brother was diagnosed with small cell carcinoma on August 29th and my sisters and I basically stopped our lives and took care of him for 3 weeks. He died on Sept 15, then the following ten days was basically mental and emotional recovery and planning his memorial and then it was catch up with work and my own family....needless to say the thought of perhaps not participating in the marathon did cross my mind...but I decided to just try.....and if at the split I wanted to do the half, I would and if at mile 20 I wanted to stop I could.....so knowing I gave myself permission to just do what I could allowed me to have a most enjoyable and theraputic "race". My original goal was to finish under 6 and I came in at 6:03....I was totally totally happy...and really no soreness or angst at all the following day!
So that was October 17th....since then I have not really done anything except catch up with work! But May 1st and Big Sur are less than 6 months away now...so I have to be serious...I did get the Big Sur training manual and am using it to keep myself motivated...some of the techiniques are beyond my novice understanding....strides and running at 80% etc.....I sometimes wish I understood it, but for now I think I will focus on building up to a long run....and prepping to start lots of hills in about 10 weeks........I notice they suggest 400 meters alot...I do not have access to a track, I pretty much just run my neighborhood. Fortunately it is safe and has LOTS of rolling hills. So I will be able to train just outside my front door...great time saver!
Well I am going to go and read other blogs, and would love to hear any suggestions that you all may have or your experiences!

BlueJewel 'Thank you so much! I am sore today...figures but it is the Hurt so Good sore! I really enjoy experiencing the way the body responds and adapts...I bet it would enjoy me just being consistent...then it would not have to hurt! oh well....it is what it is! Took my dogs for another 2 mile brisk walk this morning and did some scultping....building up to my first run scheduled for next Monday AM...it is hard because I really want to just go run, but I know I could hurt myself if I dont build up...slow and steady wins the race! Enjoy this beautiful fall day!' added 9th Nov 2010
