Getting it wrong
Mar1420102:16 p.m.
Set off to do 18 miles today but only managed 12. When I got in I felt dizzy and sick, had a massive headache and my hands had swollen up. I've read that these are all symptoms of hyponatraemia. Though I'd been sipping an isotonic sports drink all the way round, I drank a whole bottle of wine the day before (it slips down so easily while watching the rugby) and I forgot my energy gels.
Lesson learnt. No drinking the night before my LSR, and cut down significantly in general. Drink lots before going out as well as on the way round and DON'T FORGET THE ENERGY GELS!!!
Kind of glad I found this out now while I still have five weeks and two more long runs to experiment with getting it right and switch to a much healthier diet.
