Comfortable

Jan21201210:16 a.m.

Having spent a week long being under the weather with fever and flue, the long 11 mile on Saturday 14th January had become a daunting prospect. The week's build up runs were also disturbed. The 3 miles on Tuesday was fine but the 6 miles pace on Wednesday went out the window as I was back in bed with a high temperature again. Thursday's 3 mile, turned into a 5 mile tread run at the gym to make up. Real tough, and I apologise to anyone who picked up my germs, saying that after two weeks surely there's nothing to give!

However, with all the disturbances and even with a lousy domestic build-up the run was smooth and extremely enjoyable. I stupidly did not plan the fuelling well - I personally feel any run over 8 miles needs gels etc. but I hadn't even thought of that as this had been my longest run for a couple of years. The weather was ice cold, roads were frosted and breathing was a little tricky. This didn't help the cough at all! But it was beautiful, and not slippery.

I so fancied my big vegi breakie when I got back - but instead I had time for a 5 minute shower and then straight to the car for an 80 mile drive to Nottingham for my son's badminton tournament.

  • Mrs_Old_Bird 'Well done on your long run - take it easy with that cough, though. I sip lucozade sport on long runs which I find is just enough to keep me going without it being too sickly. Keep up the good work!' added 21st Jan 2012

  • Caroline_MZ1 'Wow, comments! I've never written about my running before, and now a response is just great, thank you. This cough has now become unbelievably annoying. The 12 mile yesterday was without a doubt my worst run ever. I never usually stop on long runs, but yesterday I probably stopped more times than I have in 18 years! It was a horrid day weatherise too. I did sip lucozade which helped till the bout of coughing started! Yes, I am following Hal Higdon's programme - just Novice 2. Well observed! There are so many training schedules out there :-)) I fear a another interrupted week. It's just 9 miles next weekend and then it's up, up and away! Any advice on curing a cough?!' added 22nd Jan 2012

  • Mrs_Old_Bird 'Have you been back to the doc's to see if he can give you any antibiotics? I suffer from mild asthma, and following a cold I had over Christmas I have been left with an annoying cough & a bit short of breath which my inhaler helps with. I also went to the doc's on Friday and I am on a short course of antibiotics which helped no end this morning when I managed an 8.33 mile run (part of which was uphill!) Good luck & hope you feel better soon. Kay x' added 22nd Jan 2012
