Tip 15 - Prepare for race day
Apr16200712:44 p.m.
Here are some tips from my previous running experiences. Also they seem to be echoed in the Marathon News and/or in Runners World magazine. If you are running the London it woudl be a good idea to read through either or both of these publications as they prepare you well for the Event.
Don't do anything new - keep your running gear the same as you have been training in. Now is not the time to buy new shoes. You may get blisters or chafing if you buy new kit you have not had time to get used to.
Prepare your supporters - line them up at regular points on the route or if not many invite them to a position where you will need the most encouragement (20 miles is a good spot!). Let them know your running number just in case.Set your video BBC is showing live coverage of the finish line - prepare any friends and family unable to come to London and let them know your expected finish time. They can press the Red Button on the day and check out your sprint finish! Remember to SMILE.
Set the pace Use a running bracelet with your interval times on them. You can make these yourself eg if you aim to run 10 min miles then mark on a band (or even using a marker or your arm) the times you should be at regular points en route eg 3 = 30, 6 = 60, 9= 1hr30 etc so that you can monitor your progress and avoid going off too fast.
Final advice
Get there early - Note it can take 10mins to get to the start line. Give yourself plenty of time.
Eat Breakfast - you will need the energy so do eat your normal breakfast and maybe keep a banana for the journey down.
Pack a bin bag or some old clothes to keep you warm at the start line - you will need to discard these at the roadside before you start so dont use your best gear!
Bring extra loo roll - you never know
Look where you are going - there are a lot of trip hazards round the course bottles, other runners. Keep your wits about you.Enjoy it! Take in the atmosphere and enjoy the fact that all your hard work and weekends spent training was well worth it and more importantly is very nearly over!
