Tempo or not Tempo that is the Question

Thursday 31st July - Tempo Run - Ipod: Basement Jaxx - Crazy Itch Radio

Warm Up: 1 mile @ 9.40 Av HR 150 - 67% WHR
Tempo Run 3 miles: 26:41 AV HR 171 - 82% WHR
Cool Down: 1 mile @ 10.33 AV HR 164 - 77% WHR

This was a lot slower than I have run tempo runs in the past, but have tried to keep my heart rate in zone based on the running for fitness calculator. All the books/websites say training in this zone should be hard, but it wasn't at the pace i was running today, felt I was holding back. I wonder if i can afford to push my heart rate up a few beats?

  • TISM 'Sounds like a good run, nevertheless!! My guess, and it's just a guess.... is that you might need to re-assess your MWHR, it sounds like yours is perhaps higher than the 'theoretical'?? These only work if your initial settings are absolutely correct, or else you could be doing the work in the wrong zones for YOU, which completely negate the whole exercise.' added 31st Jul 2008

  • Dom_Stevens 'Thanks TISM. Based on a the Higest Max I have got in running and regularly test resting HR so should be right, without paying for expensive tests. The tempo run section has two section beginners and advanced, so will used the advanced heart rates in the future (still always class myself as a beginner as i am so slow!, but i suppose have been training for a while and i am running 25 milesa week). That goes about 10 beats higher so should then start to feel like a run!!!! Just need to be careful not to push into 10K race pace territory.' added 31st Jul 2008

  • AnneH 'Sounds as if you and TISM have it sorted! Well done anyway and good luck with experimenting. Have a good week/weekend.' added 31st Jul 2008
