To Race or Not To Race

That is the question! Sitting here wondering whether to go and do the 10 mile race in Salisbury this morning. Kit is all ready, plenty of carbs last night - just about to sort my porridge, banana and honey and will then be ready!
Doubt in my mind is lack of running over the last week or so. Seem to have picked up a niggle in my left calf. Was very painful to start with. Good bit is with all this running, I can now recognise the signs and take the right action - stop. Previously I would have continued on hoping it will go away.
Had a sports massage on Friday, and she couldnt find anything although there was some tightness - but that was in both legs. Did 4 miles last night just as a tester, run felt ok but later the niggle was back.
Typing it is helping me think that its not important so probably give the race a miss but do 10 miles running in my own time / pace without the pressure of a race situation. Am not very good at running my own pace in races, tend to have that ego thing of wanting to beat everyone (when I know I cant). My alternative is to go and support some fellow bloggers / friends at the Bath Half this morning.
Happy Running

Suziewee 'That's a hard decision. I was going to say you could go to the race and not race, but then like you I have a competitive streak and can't help pushing harder in a race. These niggles can really get you down can't they? Go with your instinct and keep the bigger picture in your mind. Lovely day for it though :-)' added 7th Mar 2010

edwards_pk 'Always wise to listen to your body, know what you mean, bloody niggles! Get rid of one & another follows close behind, Even with less running It must be a hobby of mine now, noticed another one today, upper part of the shin, bonus havent had shin splints for years, I can add it to my collection....' added 7th Mar 2010

simonedumergue 'So - did you race in the end or not? Always a tough choice. Niggles at this stage are not to be taken lightly though. Hope the calf is behaving itself and you still managed to get some good miles in either way :-)' added 9th Mar 2010
