How do I get past 13 miles??

I set off on Sunday afternoon with the intention of completing a minimum of 15 miles, I had a new route and confidence.
Things started very very well and certainly the first half I felt very good, helped by some tremendous uplifting tunes on my ipod, I even found myself singing along at times without even noticing the run. I had 2 obstacles though, firstly it was a brand new route that I had made up so I had no idea how far it was and secondly my ipod battery was virtually empty so I couldn't really check the distance.
As I approached the end of my new route I decided to risk the battery and test the distance, anything over 13 miles and I turn left for the couple of miles jog home, disaster only 10 miles completed, this means I now have to go back on myself over ground already covered that I hadn't planned for. At this point the songs had turned to depressing and I couldn't even skip them as I needed to conserve the battery.
Yet again I found myself running on heavy legs that I could barely feel and my confidence was gone, how was I going to finish? I struggled on but just short of 13 miles my battery gave up and so did I, very low now I walked back wondering where I am going wrong.
The new habit of short gym workouts instead of evening runs is definitely not working and the couple of Mcdonalds earlier in the week probably weren't a good idea either. I think it is about 9 weeks to go now and I really am stuck at 13 miles.

JSIMMONDS 'Highs and lows are all part of the fun and games aren't they? Think how chuffed you'll be when you finally break that 13 miles and push on from there. You're still ahead of schedule though. It is as much psychological as physical. Route planning and music planning is key for me - particularly in th elatter stages of a run - I need upbeat songs and a route which means I cannot take any short cuts!' added 23rd Feb 2009

VictoriaLondon 'I found it tough to get past the 13 mile stage too. I remember I had a run in January where I was FORCING myself to keep going from the 9-13 mile part. It was horrible. But I tried it again the next weekend and it was slightly easier. You have to try each distance more than once I reckon. And make sure you've had a lot of water that day/the day before, and had lots of carbs. Also, did you have a sports drink with you? A nice sugary gel makes all the difference around the 10 mile mark. Keep at it and your body will catch up!' added 23rd Feb 2009
