The training for the marathon starts here today.

I decided to create a blog, to help me set goals for myself, track my progress and to see if anyone else has the same experiences as I do. I also hope to learn from other people through thier experiences too.

My planned runs so far for this year are:

Dorney Lake Half Marathon - 13th March 2010

Virgin London Marathon - 25th April 2010

Bupa London 10km - 31st May 2010

Berlin Marathon - 26th September 2010

I hope to fit in a couple of half marathons and 10km's in between as part of my training for the two marathons I'm running.

I first found out I had been accepted for a charity by the British Heart Foundation back in August! I was so pleased! It's my first marathon and it's 2 weeks after I turn 30, which at the moment is a big deal for me!

Problems started almost straight away from when I found out I had a place, as I broke my ankle playing in a friendly for my rugby team. Since then it's been an uphill struggle to get back to some kind of fitness and to a point where I can run.

In the past couple of weeks I've had some problems with my injury just as I thought things were starting to get better.

So, we are 14 weeks away from the London Marathon, and I feel today I have achieved something.

Yesterday I went for my first 30 minute run since before I broke my ankle and today as the start of my training programme from Full Potential for the BHF I done another 30 minute run. This 30 minute run was meant to be a recovery run, but I, again wanted to see how my ankle held up, so pushed myself a little harder. I will say, that these 30 minute runs were on a treadmill.

While I haven't been yet been given the OK to road run 2 runs with no adverse effects on the ankle is giving me hope. I'm meant to be threshold running and body conditioning over the next few days, but I have 2 sessions of physio and an NHS physio gym session which i think will be more painful!

I'm also worried about meeting my fundraising pledge. I want to raise more than what I've pledged and I'm not 100% sure on how to raise it. I have set up an online fundraising page, but that alone I don't think is enough. It's www.justgiving.com/rhineedham or www.virginmoneygiving.com/rhineedham

I'm determined to run London as it's something I've always wanted to do. I will not give up hope!

To rest or not to rest.

Yesterday I decided to go for a short cycle even though it was my rest day.

I was due to meet up with a friend of mine and then go to the gym, but since he cancelled it gave me the perfect excuse to spend more time in the gym.

After my long run on Sunday I was achy just below my knees at the top of the fibula, but it was only when I moved after sitting or standing for a long time. Other than that, no other part of me hurt, which again like last week I found strange!

I wanted to get rid of the lactic acid in the legs. I got to the gym in good time and decided to have a look at the classes that were on for that evening. A pilates class was on about 25 - 30 minutes after I had arrived.

I quickly jumped on the bike and managed just over 10 minutes of cycling, and then went to wait for the class to start. If I had known I was going to have to wait for another class to finish in the studio where the pilates class was taking place, then I would have cycled for longer.

I told the instructor about my injury, and the fact I had only been once before. I really enjoyed working on the core muscles. The 45 minute session flew by! He told me the core strength was important for marathon (which I already know) and he also mentioned that I had a very flat back which I found interesting! The class, at somepoint had to stand with one foot in front of the other touching which I found quite hard to balance, and also trying to balance on just the boney bit of the bum was quite hard. The ankle held up, through the session, but there were no movements bar one where he tried to get me to point my right foot more (obviously that wasn't going to happen!) where my ankle was really tested or pushed was was nice.

The more new things I do, and the more time I spend at my physiotherapists, the more I'm finding out my body is completely weird. Everything appears to be flat and elongated with a couple of joints pointing slightly in the wrong direction!

The ankle survived for another day! I'm meant to be going out for a 30 minute recovery run today, but I don't really feel like it, I don't have the time or the kit with me to run outside and I don't want to run on the treadmill. I'm hoping 30 minutes on the bike will be OK instead.
