Not bread of heaven.....
The topic of the week in our house has been wheat. My husband Kenny has a self-diagnosed wheat intolerance. He is generally very good at staying away from the stuff, because he hasn't drunk beer for three years or eaten normal bread. (Men hate being reminded that beer is full of wheat). However occasionally he strays to the dark side and munches a croissant or takes some pizza or pasta from the children.

Over the last few years the repercussions of this have got worse. Where once it was a mild tummy upset, he is now sometimes throwing up and falling asleep with the effects; he literally had to go to bed one day for two hours after he had some bread. Not being able to have the odd bit of wheat is a bit annoying, especially when you think of the smell of freshly baked bread when you walk into a good restaurant.
And it’s tough to miss out on croissants at breakfast and know you can never taste them again. I do point out that he isn't losing any nutrition from bread, which doesn't make him any chirpier. This 'condition' has not come as a huge surprise to him though. His Mum is a celiac and lives with the enormous limitations that imposes on her diet. Gluten is present in so many foods which you would never have thought of. After a very bad bout of sickness and weight loss a few weeks ago, Kenny decided to take this thing seriously and he has been incredibly diligent this last week and reports better 'movements', better sleep, no tiredness and more energy.

I think at 37 years old, he has finally admitted to himself that he can't have wheat again unless he wants to be sick or fall asleep. What is the point of telling you all this? Well Kenny is 92 kilos, in fact he has been that weight for ten years. Five years ago he finished playing professional rugby and he has stayed pretty much constant at that weight, while a lot of his peers have gained 5-10 kilos after retirement. But he swears it's not drinking beer or eating bread that has kept the tyre away and a four pack (not quite a six pack) present. It’s certainly not exercise, because he’s very intermittent at that. So guys if you want a quick weight loss programme, drop the beer and the bread, it seems to work for Mr Logan! Have a good week.

But if i was told I was never allowed it then I would hate it, you can't beat fresh croissants - feeling the pain mr Logan!' added 9th Mar 2010

aliza 'Has he tried the alternatives available, wheat-free breads etc? I was looking at some wheat and gluten free bagels in the supermarket the other day but they looked like those spongy things you put in your hair when you want to put it up on a bun. I don’t eat a great deal of bread but to have none would be a nightmare. ' added 10th Mar 2010
