Update: (16/05/2009)

Having made a lifestyle choice, at almost 18 stone and being unable to run to the loo(!!), I applied for the FLM 2009. I got in and ran for SPARKS having lost over 4 and a half stone! Was a fantastic day, but my right calf went after 16 miles and I limped and hobbled the last 10 and over the finish line.

So I must carry on running to keep the weight off and better my PB's. Ballot entered for 2010, so fingers crossed. - got place with Children with Leukaemia!!

Still not built for speed, but am improving and keeping going. Many thanks for the support of my wonderful wife Debs, and my two little angels, Derry and Ellie.

Come on Gazz liven up!

I officially hate tapering!! I cannot get myself into it. Woke up this morning planning to do a 7 miler, but not really wanting to. Set off like a steam train and got to 4 miles in 37 minutes (quick for me). Suddenly felt stiffness in my right shoulder, so I used it as an excuse to stop and walk home, as didn't want to get a serious injury. Pathetic I know.

So having sat here and read some posts of people still do 18 miles, 14 miles and 12 I need to take stock.

POSITIVES - I have done a 20 mile run. Last Thursday (only a week ago) I did 12 and felt awesome. Did a PB on Tuesday for 4.5 miles. I didn't have breakfast this morning. I really went off too quick.

NEGATIVES - Its a bad run. 26.2 miles is along way and am I ready?

So all in all, I know I am panicking, but I have posted before that 90% is mental and only 10% physical, so when you have a bad run so close my mind works overtime.

Have planned a 9 for Sunday, so fingers crossed.

your positives massively outweigh the negatives! Just make sure you do a decent run at he weekend, with lots of fuel inside you :-) Your taper is going well! I'd disagree about it only being 10% physical - it's incredibly tough on the body and requires a lot of training and that's why it's so hard to push through the last 6 miles on the day... so get taperin' ;)

On the negative remember you will not be alone numerous runners with you and even more spectators.
Glad you are running I am still not right but going hiking today instead of a run lots of big hills and hopefully photos.

I can definitely relate to the feelings of panic, worry and general obsession!
Seems to me that you ARE on track and don't need to be freaking out.

I did read somewhere that there is no point cramming in extra runs or anything like that at this stage as there is nothing to be gained. Either we are fit enough to do this thing now, or we're not!
Hope the 9 miles goes well on Sunday.

Simones got it right, no point cramming in anymore extra long runs, too late for that, more likely to over do it & either burn yourself out or pick up an injury before the 26th. Stick to the training plan & keep with the positives, youve be fine.
No setting off like a steam train & dont forget that most important breakfast.

gazz,

Believe me, if I feel I have done enough to get round the 26.2 then so have you. Remember - 99% of people who cross the start line finish the marathon.

You can and will do it in fine style.

In this last few weeks you won't be getitng fitter - it's maintenance of the fitness you have.

Every time I walk somewhere or go up the stairs I feel my mind going tight with aprehension that I will feel a pain that wasn't there before. Every time I sneeze I worry it's a cold. These worries are blotting out the distance at the moment. I haven't throught about not getting round since I did my long run. Crawl, walk or slide on me bum, this marathon is ours and nothing can stop us.

Don't panic Gazz-everyone is roughly in the same boat at the mo-we are all obsessing and thinking "can I do this"-upshot of it is YES YOU WILL and you will never forget it-as soon as you cross that line everything else will fade away. Keep on going-its really not that far away now!! :-)

Chill out mate we're nearly there. Remember less is more at this stage!

Listen here, the thing you really should be worrying about is that you are starting the FLM with me!! I am told it is not uncommon to get some darker moods and it is can actually be a sign of a lot of training. You ARE ready. You WILL succeed. The next couple of weeks is all about ticking over enough, fueling, resting - none of us will get any fitter, but if we deviate from plans and advice we do run the risk of injury, fatigue and all sorts of other problems. Stick to your plan and start worrying about how you can cope with me for many hours!!

You'v worked hard for this marathon so chill, enjoy the taper and only think positive thoughts! - know exactly what you mean about the 90% mental thing - thats why it all has to be positive thoughts from here on! - we can do this!!!
