Update: (16/05/2009)

Having made a lifestyle choice, at almost 18 stone and being unable to run to the loo(!!), I applied for the FLM 2009. I got in and ran for SPARKS having lost over 4 and a half stone! Was a fantastic day, but my right calf went after 16 miles and I limped and hobbled the last 10 and over the finish line.

So I must carry on running to keep the weight off and better my PB's. Ballot entered for 2010, so fingers crossed. - got place with Children with Leukaemia!!

Still not built for speed, but am improving and keeping going. Many thanks for the support of my wonderful wife Debs, and my two little angels, Derry and Ellie.

Time to push on.........start date 19th October

In my last post some 4-5 weeks ago I was feeling positive and the running was moving forward well, but since then thingshave gone a bit south shall we say.

Firstly I got a cold, probably man flu and attempted a 10 miler after about 2 days recovery. It nearly killed me, but I finished albeit with a couple of small walks involved. When I then went for a recovery run 2 days later the dreaded calf went again. The pain was horrendous and so between then and the Birmingham Half (about 4 weeks) I had probably on run about 4 or 5 times maximum and only to about 5 miles.

Got the rejection letter from VLM (pooh!!) and so have applied for a Golden Bond place with SPARKS, the best charity in the world! Will hopefully find out in a week or so, so fingers crossed.

Got to Birmingham on Sunday  not overly confident, but thinking that surely after the last 12 months should have enough in the legs.................god I was rubbish!!! First 5 was fine and was on for a 2:15, but after that my legs just had no spring in them. Came home in 2:36:02, my worst half ever and confidence severely dented. Legs still ache today. So time for a plan of action!!

The calf feels fine and I know 6 miles is a breeze still, so I am going to take the rest of the week off  and start fresh again on Monday. This way I have no pressure to force myself for a run this week and I can enjoy my Sunday out with the family (going to Drayton Manor can't wait to see Thomas!!)

Lovely to meet Vicky and Chris on Sunday, and fantastic to see my food guru (Simone) and pace bitch (BW) back in blogland.

Take care. Gazz

hey!!! Nice to see your post ping up in my in-box and great to see you are still on here.
Your half marathon experience is not surprising considering the few weeks you had prior. Just put it behind you, like you say and look forward.
Fingers crossed for that charity place. Would be great to have you back in the saddle for VLM. Wouldn't be the same without you taking the piss out of my posts :-)

Sorry to read you've been unwell, man flu eh - serious stuff!!!!! and then the calf problem, that's not good, have you seen a physio about it? Know the feeling about confidence being dented - mine was on the floor following FLM earlier this year and that's why I quickly signed up for another race - what's your next one going to be?
Take care and be careful when you go out running on Monday.

Wondered where you'd vanished to Gazz...The dreaded man flu eh!
Bloody well done for getting round!

Good luck with the charity place Gazz & well done completing the half with so little training, so easy to throw in the towel & not turn up.

I agree, the time is irrelevant, after that few weeks it's all about the fat that you still got back on the horse and got round. Well done.

Don't think the grey, damp weather helped much either! We both had a naff race, but at least we did it and didn't throw the towel in, that has to be a positive for mental attitude.

I'm VLM reject too but really don't have the energy for a gold bond place. Good luck with your application though.

A finish is a finish! You could have no showed, so good on you for doing it in the 1st place.

Get a plan for that calf as well as for the running - it deffo needs "managing" otherwise it may end up being a (literal) pain every so often, and with Sod and his law, probably when you least want it to be!
