Bitten on the bum...

Feb0120114:44 p.m.

Been a while. A long while. And I wasn't planning to blog again. Like I wasn't planning to run another bloody marathon. But you never know what's waiting just around the corner to bite you on the bum do you? And it appears, thanks to a persuasive and wonderful charity, and realbuzzy peeps on Facebook that I have been bitten on the bum big time, as I have signed up to run Brighton Marathon on the 10th April for Kidney Research UK.

How on earth did that happen? I'm sure I said 'never again' after London last year...Mind you, 'never again' has passed my lips many a time...to no avail. So here I am. Again. Running a marathon. Hey ho.

However, I haven't actually been sitting on said bitten bum, I have been running. Quite a lot really. And on Sunday, fired up by the knowledge that in the not too distant future I shall have to run 26.2 miles, I ran 12 miles. Next Sunday will be 14 and so it goes on. And do you know what? Me and my bitten bum are quite looking forward to Brighton. Maybe the trick here is not to get bitten on the bum until quite late on in the proceedings. After all, it would have been rather sensible to begin training at the beginning of January, not the beginning of February. Psychologially though, to know that actually I've only got a couple of months of mind and bum numbingly long runs to suffer makes the process seem somehow less traumatic.

And this year Hal Higdon can take a running jump. Last year I followed his Intermediate 2 plan and I was exhausted by the time I reached the start line of the VLM. So this year I shall train differently - 1 x long slow run, building up to 20 miles - hopefully get two of those in; 1 x medium run of about 10-ish miles; 1 x parkrun which will be a tempo, lung exploding, speedy 3 mile event and 1 x mega-hills. Plus, as I am running/cycling in a Duathlon at the end of Feb, 1 x cycle intervals on turbo afterwhich a short run to make sure the legs get the message on the day that they need to work in a sensible fashion and not mimic the movements of a penguin. Of course, I shall chuck in some Pilates and some upper body weights. 2 x complete rest days. Sorted. Right, better get on with it then.

Happy running.

  • simonedumergue 'How lovely to see you back on here and I LOVE your blog intro that you have re-written. Reads beautifully. I am so inspired that you are going for another one. If I can ever get back to running fitness again (laid off with a calf injury - three weeks on and not much progress) I feel a real urge to get a meaty challenge again. I have enjoyed seeing your FB status updates and how you are so pumped after each run. Your training plan sounds really good. Now that you have done three marathons you have enough experience and insight to know what will work for you. Good luck with the new challenge xx' added 1st Feb 2011

  • Jenny1961 'I'm really happy to see you blogging again Harri! And I'm genuinely excited that you are doing the Brighton marathon! Nothing wrong with old Hal my girl! Although last year I used a mixture of Hal and an Ironman training programme for VLM and only did 4 runs- but it did get me a pb! I put that down to the cross training effects of the cycling so its brilliant that you are duathling as well :)' added 1st Feb 2011

  • alijwhelan 'Good to see you back here Harri-some of the training plans I contemplated knackered me out just by reading them. I'm kinda doing my own thing and certainly not beating myself up about training - after all my main aim is to enjoy running. Hope you enjoy Brighton and training for it.' added 1st Feb 2011
