Knobbled by the knee...
Jun11201112:24 p.m.
Lordy crumbs. So what was I saying in my previous blog? That I shall not be running the South Downs Marathon today for fear of injury and jeopardizing the forthcoming fantastic training week in the French Alps at the end of the month....with you know who... And what do I do? Hurt my knee doing (what must have been badly performed) stupid lunges in bare feet - very bad personal trainer - should be fired...And now I can’t run!
I have rarely been injured, for which I am eternally grateful, or was, and am so careful...usually. So what to do? I have an appointment with an Osteopath on Monday who treats sports injuries, so I will discover what’s what. Although, I think I know what’s what because I’ve done extensive research....As you do.
First of all I thought it might be a Meniscal injury, but then I saw this could potentially put me out of action for months, so decided it couldn’t possibly be that, no way. Definitely wrong symptoms. Definitely. Then I decided it might be a Chondromalacia (runner’s knee) but read surgery might be on the agenda with that baby, so deleted that from the list immediately. Lordy crumbs again. And then I read about ITB friction syndrome - so think it’s the ol’ lateral bastard epicondyle (outside of the knee ITB rubbing, to you and me)....and yes, will take time (a bit) to repair. Of course. But not much... But I could be wrong. Might be sprained wussy-cow-knee- syndrome, very common in procrastinating fifty-something runners who don’t pay attention when performing lunges....that will be better by Wednesday afternoon at 4pm on the dot. Please.
Once I have a diagnosis and prognosis from said Osteo (she doesn’t know she is about to meet the patient from hell) I shall have to let my new best friends Matt and Lizzy know that I won’t be able to run, if that is the case, which I bloody hope isn’t....And indeed it might not be... Oh for Gawd’s sake and luvverduck and several hundred other expleteves that RB will **** out!!!! I am still going to go to the Alps though even if I can’t run (which I hope I can - do you think if I keep saying that, it will happen?) and I will glean as much info out of the Yellings as poss (and whine a lot, but sadly not drink wine, cos I don’t...which is just as well because I would right now if I did....actually, 3 years sober yesterday....bloody amazing...) sorry, digressed... and I will swim and walk and do all the other stuff they offer...Just not...errr... run.
Not funny. Well, it is a bit....I could choose to find this all deeply depressing but life shifts and changes and throws curved balls into the arena on an ongoing basis which often means finding other ways through the shagpile of living doesn't it? And I shall find that route whatever it might be.
And the knee might be okay after all, so all this worry and gumph and angst is for absolutely nothing. Meanwhile, I am performing ITB stretches ad infinitum and some Pilates exercises I know that help knees. I might also get on my bike tomorrow if it doesn’t affect the knee and walk and do what I do best which is drive the long suffering husband completely and utterly bonkers! Apparently I've already started. Not running is very dangerous, I have too much energy....
Happy running!
Hx
PS. Wrote the above this morning and now have just been for walkies and the knee isn’t as bad....Yay!

Firefly123 'That's some rant, Harri, but you rant away. Trouble is, when we like to run most days, taking even three days off makes us feel as if we haven't run for ages and have forgotten how to etc etc. I didn't run for 3 days with my hamstring and quite honestly I was climbing the metaphorical wall. I really hope things improve and that you're running again soon xx' added 11th Jun 2011

terry 'Do you know it could be something really simple like a ligament strain....no need for all these dramatic diagnosis! You need to be injured more often Hat and then you would be used to such niggles. Dying to find out what it is!!! Lol- Terry x' added 11th Jun 2011

Jenny1961 'Oh I do love how we try and self diagnose- and immediately 'rule out' anything that looks as if it could put us out of action for ages! You summed it all up so perfectly Harri- and very comically. But I know you must be feeling absolutely gutted at the sheer thought of not being able to fully participate in the doings of Yelling and Co so do really feel for you :( Like Keith and Terry say- it could be something simple and may well clear up quickly anyway. Let's all hope so fervently and I will keep everything crossed for you. You dropped in that yesterday represented 3 years of sobriety Harri. Well done you! That's an incredible achievement in itself.xx ' added 11th Jun 2011

Nick 'I'm sure you would have enjoyed the South Downs this morning, Hat! Another year perhaps. Hope the knee sorts itself out soon. If it came on suddenly, then it might go away quickly as well.' added 11th Jun 2011

Suziewee 'oh Hat if it wasn't for your despair I would have found that amusing ;-) Now I am no expert but I am sure you have probably just overstretched a ligament and it's complaining. Did you feel a horrid twang or sudden pain while doing the lunges or did the pain come later? A few days rest and you will be leaping round the alps with the Yellings I am sure of it. It's your excitement or the trip that is probably making you fear the worst. Hang in there. I love your comment about the shagpile of living - that has cheered me up no end xx' added 11th Jun 2011
