Tickety-boo week 10
Week 10 - LSR of 19 miles completed this morning bringing the week's total to 45 miles. And I am well and truly pooped. However, it's done.
Actually I think it's the boredom that gets to me more than anything on these long runs - I can listen to music for a while, I can listen to the birds and the wind for a while, I can meditate on my (rather loud) breathing for a while, I can even listen to a talking book or count my steps backwards and then forwards and then in French or I can listen to the inane and oh so tedious thoughts that pop in and out of my addled brain and talk to myself and of course I can look around me at the beautiful countryside and wildlife and be grateful. But that still leaves another 18 bleedin' miles of boredom!
What does everyone else do/think about?
However, the highlight of my run today was seeing my husband lying prostrate in the mud swearing far too loudly and repetitively having slipped as he wheeled his bike along a very muddy path I had chosen to take. Trouble is, laughter and running just don't go together. Every time I laughed my legs gave way! Twas funny though.
And so. Tomorrow I shall be spending most of the day on a Yoga workshop which I'm really looking forward to and I'm sure my hamstrings and glutes will appreciate it too.
Happy Running.

Suziewee 'Fantastic, bet it feels good to get another long one under your belt. I am doing 17 tomorrow and am just a bit apprehensive. I have no idea how I will pass the 3 hours. I usually think about allsorts as I don't run with music. Good luck for next week, its a tough one. ' added 27th Feb 2010

Shaun 'Well done on the long run Harri, fantastic mileage this week! I'm really enjoying doing all my long runs with the club this year, the conversation makes it all a lot more interesting.' added 27th Feb 2010

Way_Too_Slow 'Have you discovered the Marathon Talk podcasts? They talk about all things... well... marathon related! A new episode each week and each one lasts about an hour. I usually save it for my long run. It certainly helps the time pass. Well done on the 19 miles, no wonder you are pooped if you have run 45 miles this week!!' added 27th Feb 2010

gunes 'Wow well done on the mileage! I know sometimes it does get boring on the long runs and I often listen to music,or sometimes its just nice to take in the scenery and sounds of the countryside,or I plan things I need to do. Although I have only reached 14 miles this time round and can only run shorter distances this week due to an injury, but have next weeks 16 miler to think about,I might try the podcasts everyone talks about. Oh I have just remembered a friend of mine who swims the channel said to counteract the boredom she use to do calculations of figures in her head, But the best way for time to go quicker is if you are able to run with others on long runs! Enjoy your Yoga! ' added 27th Feb 2010

squa25 'Well done on completing a biggie! I've been fortunate to have done my long runs with my friend so we chat most of the way round , mind you I can't remember what we've talked about. We do a bit of sight seeing so chat about the rich folk, followed by the poorer folk- you only have to go a couple of streets to find rich becomes poor- then either of us will start thinking about food and so the where to eat what to eat convo commences. These are usually quite long convos. If I'm on my own I usually Use the environment as a distraction. New roads distract me immensely as I have to think about where to go and where I'll end up. I find this makes the run less boring for me. ' added 27th Feb 2010

lou21 'The Archers.... that is how I pass the time, but then some might think that is a form of medieval torture! I might have a go at those Marathon Talk podcasts. Thanks for the comment on my blog... just having a moany day. I feel better already... I had a lovely hot bath after I wrote that blog, with my Runners World! Enjoy the yoga tomorrow xx' added 27th Feb 2010

crooxi '45 miles!!! No wonder you're tired! Well done on the 19 miles. I sometimes go over text on my runs, singing it in my head (not out loud!) in rhythm with my footsteps - helps to din it into my memory. Most of my runs include some of what quaintly used to be called 'nature study' - pausing to identify a bird or talk to the deer (or a cat will do, in a more urban setting) is a good excuse for a few seconds' breather. I often do long runs with my partner........... in which case a row is a good way of enlivening the tedium!' added 27th Feb 2010

simonedumergue '45 miles - wow. Nice work! I find the anticipation of the long runs the worst - that feeling of dread of dragging myself out and putting that first foot on my path of 'longness'. Pretty much like you - music, admiring my surroundings and then inane things like trying to work out sums in my head that distract me, composing my blog post, people watching, singing to the cows, making up stories about the people living on the narrow boats, fantasizing about building a successful business, wondering if the husband will remember to feed the kids while I am out, remembering that I forgot to to something critical, reflecting on the fact my legs are tired, thinking about the red wine and dark chocolate I will have later that evening, imagining coming down the Mall again and replaying that last one ad nauseum everytime I want to stop :-) But on the whole - the long runs are pretty tedious!!' added 28th Feb 2010

onthefloor04 'I listen to the thoughts when i'm on my long run ( and usually swear at myself a bit for being a creaky old runnner) Failing that it's shuffle on the ipod for the long runs home from work. It's amazing the songs you discover that you had forgotten you owned.' added 1st Mar 2010
