Advice please from marathoners
Nov2220113:46 p.m.
Another week sails by. Another physio appointment. More pain and IT stretching and massaging. Leg is feeling slightly better, but physio has advised me to have another week’s rest from running. With the marathon approaching on December 18th, this means I will start running again with less than three weeks to go. I have done a few long runs weeks ago but no more than 17 miles (and that hurt and was slow).
Any ideas on what I should do given that I can’t run till Tuesday 29th November, what do I do in the remaining three and a half weeks? Tapering seems a bit silly given that I have already effectively tapered for the last 3-4 weeks.
Any ideas? (And don’t say “don’t do the marathon” because that is not an option).

SeanG 'Tricky, tricky. Would advise running LSRs of about 13 miles up to 2 weeks out, then drop to 10 or 8 miles with 1 week to go and then just run some 4 milers in the week before. Normal convention is to keep the intensity of your sessions the same but reduce the distance during a taper. The higher your weekly mileage the less you need to taper too.' added 22nd Nov 2011

Nick 'Well the sensible thing would be not to run the marathon - but you know that already! Best advice otherwise - do whatever training you can do and base your target for the race on what you have been able to achieve. Just accept you won't be able to run as fast as you had planned.' added 22nd Nov 2011

Motor 'bike fitness is not transferrable!!!! you can have a 2 week taper, but anything you do in the final two weeks will have no impact come rac day. i say marathon running is 50% physical and 50% mental' added 22nd Nov 2011

simonedumergue 'Jon, out of interest have you ever had accupuncture from a sports physio for any injuries? I have used it a few times and it is incredibly effective. I had a really long lasting period of ITB problems and nothing was making it better. I then had an intense treatment of accupuncture from my physio that was trained in it (the tension that released from the trigger points actually bent the needles!!) and it was like a miracle - sorted!! Not all physios offer it and you need to find someone trained, but I have used it very effectively for different running injuries and am evangelical about its effectiveness. Good luck with the marathon x' added 2nd Dec 2011
